Had this sitting around since Black Friday and I need a break from KCD. Things I remember about it:

1) people said the battle system sucks
2) you collect cutesy creatures for battling (?)
3) I remember a spoiler from a long time ago because one dude here kept insisting it wasn't a spoiler and ended up with a 180-day purg for it, lmao.

Yeah I wasn't a huge fan of the battle system and to me it seemed like mostly palette swaps, few unique critter designs.

Huh, I thought it was going to be grid-based battling, not running around with a wand like it's Quest 64.

I tried getting into it when it first came out but I really could not vibe with the battle system.

The second one is good but fairly simple. Good series though.

The battle system is okay, but not wowing me. In fact, not much of the game is doing that. It's just pleasant and simple in the same way Rhapsody (PS1) and Evolution 1 & 2 (Dreamcast) are fun. Using spells to change things on the field also smacks of Golden Sun.

The fairy dude who tags along is a bit annoying, though, since he's constantly belaboring every point. We haven't gotten to "Press X to use the ladder" territory yet, but it's approached it.

I also named all my familiars after FFT characters. So far, it's Kanbabrif, Izlude and Kletian.

I always see the second game for cheap, but I wanted to try the first one before anything else. The anime stuff can be off-putting, but it hasn't been outright bad so far. (Although I did spend an hour looking for some hide and seek kid, only to find he was in the weapon shop the whole time. )

I liked this game for what it was.

A game that feels like an animated kids movie trying to teach you about the hardships of life (Mom dying) with a pretty generic combat system and wannabe Pokemon.

The graphics are great, the music is great, the rest of it was kind of meh. But I did enjoy it.

The second game is meh compared to the first imo. Yeah the combat can be considered an improvement but even then it's nothing too special. It pales in comparison to the first regarding everything else. I was pretty let down.

Hmm, let's see...what did I do yesterday... Went through the mushroom forest, spanked the guardian, went to the desert town, got the sage and his kid to help, then left town and died in some tutorial (). Also have to do the nightmare boss over since I didn't save for a long time -- kinda atypical behavior for me. I blame how easy the game's been up to this point.

Hm I recall the combat being kind of difficult because of how weak your pokemon are compared to enemies.

And I remember Oliver's super move thing being the only worthwhile one.

My first familiar is pretty powerful now that I've force-fed him pies and sundaes and stuff. Sugar doping, lmao.

The girl and her fat birdmage familiar aren't that great so far, but with a few levels under their belt, they won't blow through their low HP and MP reserves. My team isn't good enough to take on this bounty hunt tiger (double attacker), but we're getting there. I did the first three merit cards for some small bonuses.

One of my favourite games. I played it non stop when I got my ps3 until getting the platinum trophy. Some of the grinding for that is incredibly tedious but overall I loved the game. I bought it because of the Ghibli connection.

The sequel sucks, I couldn't be bothered to finish it

Kicking some ass on these water creatures around Castaway Cove, and even did a few bounties in the area. Before I take on Shadar near the next port, gonna try to buff my team a bit and use alchemy to get goodies. It's weird that they gave my new dude a creature who, by default, can't find any headwear on the entire friggin' continent, though.

Eventful morning so far -- did Fairyground stuff last night, then started Hamelin quests. Got a good laugh when I realized I'd been sent back into the past (was wondering why all the sidequests disappeared), but then breezed through Tombstone Trail to help the sage out. Now that I'm armed with the Travel spell, things should be a little easier.

Garcon being Swaine was ridiculously obvious after awhile. Kinda surprised they didn't come out with it earlier.

I played the original.

The characters, writing, world, design and story are charming and very well done. Although the combat system is hot garbage. Vital mechanics for example like defending are strangely absent in the beginning which inflates the games difficulty far more then it was.

And all except a handful of monsters by endgame are worth using. Which is why you see the same 3-4 ones in most playthroughs. Making the monster capture system a waste of time.

Which admittedly is a mistake many pokemon style battle systems make. FF13-2 comes to mind here.

The biggest problem with the battle system is that it can't figure out what it wants to be, and none of the disparate parts pair well together.

I have a basic Purrloiner somewhere, but it's LV1, so I don't feel like using it.

I hope the default monster for Oliver is worth using, since mine is at max evolution is is pretty good. That monolith one is a DEF powerhouse, too.

Yeah, if the game had leaned more towards Grandia-style fighting and cancelling instead of spreading itself rather thin, it'd probably be better. As it is, it's just okay.

If it was easier to cancel, I'd probably like it more. Only bosses telegraph their attacks, so for most, you're either guarding (usually a better option) or cancelling on accident, which isn't fun.

Got to the Ivory Tower now. At the final savepoint, I decided to grind a bit and ended up finding some creatures that give 24000 XP, so getting to Lv100 (for fun!) should be possible. I've learned the usefulness of Veil as well, so that should be good for backtracking through this garbage dump of a dungeon.
