But the insane power creep is sad. Apparently its so bad that most decks are unplayable after a few new sets.

I can live with broken cards, I mean I play Vintage, Legacy, and Modern MTG so I am used to it. But I do NOT like having to buy entire new decks every year just to stay relevant.

How does MTG compare in that regard?

The only rotating format is Standard. My favorite decks for the most part have stayed the same for the eternal formats. The deck that gets the most play from me, Jund. Only had two cards swapped out in the last 3 years or so. But 90% of it has been the same for 8, give or take a year, years.

The Vintage and Legacy formats are about the same.

God, I miss Yu-Gi-Oh! at it's height.

I stopped keeping up with it sometime after the 5Ds era, but it remains one of my favorite franchises.

Same. The 5Ds era is more or less when I tapped out.

Sadly, power creep hits most TCG's eventually. OG Pokemon cards are basically useless now, if for nothing else that most cards have 2-3x of the HP, and thus higher damage scaling. But at least Pokemon has the excuse of being around for longer. YGO's creep just kinda exploded.

It's the same, unless you're not playing the standard format.

My three LGS that do MTG events, that I might add that even DURING Covid has 30+ attendees, only have Commander(Gross), Modern, and draft. you MAY see a stand alone standard game on one of the stores, but the other two not at all.

AND the two largest MTG groups on facebook is only Commander(still gross), Modern, and Vintage.

It was the only playing card game I ever got into. I can't remember for the life of me how to play it, I haven't played it since I was like 12.

On one hand, cards like La Jinn used to be great beatsticks. On the other hand, you could say "fuck everything on your entire field" with just two cards.

I'm fine with anything Yu-Gi-Oh up until Synchro, but all the new summoning methods after that are just ridiculous and overkill.

Haven't Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh TCG been around for nearly the same amount of time?

Spending that much isn't bad considering you will be playing that deck for 10 plus years.

Also, the other two decks in the top three are under 500 bucks. So it isn't bad.

Hell Red Deck WIns is like 200.

Early YGO was terrible. It took a few years before it got good.

The cartoon and manga were the reverse, they started great back when they made shit up then went to crap around the time they started doing something resembling actual rules. When your monsters could attack the moon, that was fun. When a floating castle could fall on zombies for no good reason, things were interesting.

Out of all the CCGs I played over the years, I wouldn't rank YGO all that highly.

The Pokemon TCG only allows the most recent sets to be used, of course older sets are basically useless now. And no, the first few sets had some absolutely broken cards that would dominate current Pokemon TCG, like Professor Oak which has infinite uses unlike supporters like Professor Sycamore did in the XY-era (And Professor's Research does in the SwSh meta).

For reference, Professor's Research is a $2 card at the moment:
https://www.trollandtoad.com/pokemon/sword-shield-base-set-singles/professor-s-research-178-202-holo-rare/1645198

And yes, I kinda keep up with Pokemon TCG despite the fact I don't play it, and haven't in a long time.

Honestly, if everyone has access to the same broken cards and the amount of available cards isn't overwhelming enough to encourage the same 1HKO decks every time, vintage can be pretty fun.

But spending thousands of dollars on cardboard is a weird nerd culture ego stroke, and if your ego needs to win at something so badly, chess is a much greater impress.

Not to mention Bill, which was a draw 2 (ie, a +1 advantage) with no cost or drawback.

I more meant the Pokemon themselves. It's a given in all TCG's that "support" cards (Trainers, Spells/Traps, relics, etc.) always contain the most broken cards (Pot of Greed, Rageki, etc. for YGO).

Which also tends to be more true of the early game than the later game.
