https://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/cto/d/pinole-95-toyota-land-cruiser-sell-or/7155927343.html

What should I be looking for if I check it out or test drive it? Is this a good buy for $6600 with 276k miles? Ive been looking at 4runners for the longest time but recently turned my attention to Land Cruisers, so I dont know much about them.

You would need to get access to the full maintenance history as well as accident reports before you even consider it. If the seller can't provide that, walk away immediately. He is asking a fortune for a vehicle with 275k miles, even if you could reasonably expect to double that. The timing belt interval is 120k on these, so it should have already been changed twice. Make sure the oil has been changed at a proper interval as well. If you see it in person, examine the undercarriage thoroughly with the brightest light you can get your hands on, looking for any signs of worn seals (fluid or moisture present) and deep rust on the frame. Since this is in California there's going to be a ton of rust under there, you need to scrape at it with a knife and if you expose bare metal there's likely nothing to be concerned about. You also need to drive it and stop it at a bunch of different speeds to get a feel for how it runs and to listen for any strange noise. If he's not willing to let you drive it for 50+ miles, walk away. Ask him if you can take it to a mechanic to have them check it out, this might cost you some money, but if you're buying a used car that's part of the process, if he doesn't let you, walk away.

If you make an offer, start no higher than $4200. He's charging a bunch extra for the expensive tires and for the extra work he's done that doesn't effect the function of the vehicle, some of which is unfinished.

I don't think you guys realize that some of these cars actually do go for crazy stupid money if they're in good condition. I understand why you laugh, but it's true. Google search "95 Toyota Land Cruiser" and look at the prices that pop up, some as much as $3000 more than this with similar mileage.

I found this out when I started looking for decent off road vehicles. You're asking for even more money if you look at similarly aged Jeep Cherokees.

So theres a lot of misinformation here. Land Cruisers are extremely popular cars. In my area (SoCal), great condition FJ80 Land Cruisers sell for about $12k+. Great condition FJ40 Land Cruisers are like $25k+ Theyre on par with YJ and TJ Jeeps Wranglers on popularity. Theyre known to be extremely reliable and Toyota still makes parts for them.

To the TC, to be honest, thats actually a lower price than expected for that mileage. Id definitely check to some underlying issues.

Thank you guys, I appreciate that atleast you two know what youre talking about here.

The rest of you are fucking plebs. Do some research on Toyota Land Cruiser prices before you go hUrR dUrR HiGh MiLeAgE bAd. Im not looking at a Chevy fucking Tahoe or a Ford Explorer here. Land Cruisers are collectible vehicles and have a history of maintaining their value regardless of mileage, because they can last longer than anything else on the road.

I honestly put too much faith in CE. Should have prefaced my original post with additional information on Land Cruiser value. You dorks are embarrassing yourselves. Youve all made it abundantly clear you have no expertise in this space, yet you believe you have the authority to insult my intelligence anyway. Sad.

And to reply to this post specifically...

I actually just moved from SoCal to Norcal and the prices Ive encountered for used 4runners (atleast) are higher up here than back in LA, surprisingly enough. But yeah the $6600 seemed suspiciously low which is why I wanted to figure out what I should be looking for during a test drive. Ive seen these easily go for 5 figures. Same year, similar mileage.

Check mate again, because I did post this on the car and truck board before this topic. But that board is dead compared to CE.

I dont necessarily need expert opinions, but I also didnt need 8 consecutive posters roasting me when they literally have no idea what theyre talking about either.

I wasnt lumping you in there at all, sorry if it appeared otherwise! One thing that really threw me off was the assumption that California vehicles would have alot of rust, which is the complete opposite out here lol. If Im serious about this, Ill most definitely be taking it to a mechanic to have it inspected.

Oh word, yeah I guess I based that assumption on cars I'd seen that were from Florida and other coastal states. I used to do inspections for Enterprise and we'd often get current year models from coastal states that had a complete coat of rust on the undercarriage. Now that you mention it, it wasn't as humid as I was expecting when I went to California a couple years ago. I live in the north and we get pretty bad rust on ours from the salt they put on the road. These Toyotas are extremely popular here too, along with the T100s, but it's rare to see one in as good of condition of the one posted here.

Kelly blue book it.

A lot of Toyotas will hold they're value pretty well since they'll pretty much go forever if you take care of them. And from those pictures either someone has taken very good care of that car or they had it restored. I'm gonna assume the former

Honestly I wouldnt recommend getting into a vintage type car like that unless you do your own work on it or at least know someone who can work on it with you.

I had a 91 Toyota pickup that was costing me over $1000 in repair costs every year the last few years (Had the 4WD need fixing, then needed a new clutch, then the AC compressor, then the cooling/radiator, then the ECU which caused a total shutdown and had to have it towed off the freeway...you get the picture). I had it until it blew the head gasket and I gave up on it at that point.

A lot people don't realize that some older SUVs are becoming quite sought after and are therefore increasing in value. It would be a fun vehicle to own but it is a gas guzzler and you will most likely have to dump some more money(maybe even a lot more) into it in the near future.

If I was looking for a daily driver there's absolutely no way I'd be dropping that much on a car with over 250k miles.

If this is a hobby car, sure why not. I don't know much about that make and model but checking standard things like looking for fluid leaks, making sure it shifts smoothly while driving, engine idles evenly at a reasonable RPM, steering and brakes feel responsive are all good general things to check out for a used vehicle. As someone previously said, receipts or repair logs should be requested.
