My perception on the poll choices (might be right, might not be right):
  • Dealership will fix the issue right. But it'll cost you an arm and a leg. If dealership fucks up, they'll fix it and make you whole with no fight. They have to maintain their reputation (every time you bring your car to the dealership, the manufacturer sends you a rating request, and if you rate them less than a 9/10, they're screwed).
  • The major chain mechanics will hire anyone off the streets and not have good mechanics. However, because they are a major chain, if something does go wrong, they might try to make it right; but some chains really don't care, and you have to fight to get it done.
  • The small-time mechanics are hit or a miss; you'll have fantastic mechanics that have their own shops, or even shadier ones that will claim they did the work, but they didn't.

A small mechanic my mom's boyfriend knew tried to fuck me over. My car was throwing up an evap leak error. I thought the diagnosis would be free but they charged me $60 and they wanted $500 to replace the fuel pump and fuel tank gasket when all it needed was a new temp sensor which cost like $20.

Why's that? They'll use OEM parts and know exactly how to fix it using the manufacture's direct shop manuals, and not off-brand shop manuals. It's just it costs a lot.

It depends on what it needs, and how I'm feeling about doing the work myself.

Self repair. Im not an ACE certified mechanic but I am an aircraft mechanic. The fundamentals do transfer between the two.

I look around online for local shops with great reviews. You find a self employed local guy who really knows what he's doing, the work will get done right It will be a fair price. Those types of people are able to stay in business because great word of mouth and need to keep you happy. Chains and dealerships don't give af because they're the first thing to pop up on Google so tons of clueless people go there simply because it's the first option they saw.
