A small mechanic my mom's boyfriend knew tried to fuck me over. My car was throwing up an evap leak error. I thought the diagnosis would be free but they charged me $60 and they wanted $500 to replace the fuel pump and fuel tank gasket when all it needed was a new temp sensor which cost like $20.

Never EVER take your car to the dealership out of warranty. Why's that? They'll use OEM parts and know exactly how to fix it using the manufacture's direct shop manuals, and not off-brand shop manuals. It's just it costs a lot. --- ... Copied to Clipboard!

It depends on what it needs, and how I'm feeling about doing the work myself.

Self repair. Im not an ACE certified mechanic but I am an aircraft mechanic. The fundamentals do transfer between the two.

I look around online for local shops with great reviews. You find a self employed local guy who really knows what he's doing, the work will get done right It will be a fair price. Those types of people are able to stay in business because great word of mouth and need to keep you happy. Chains and dealerships don't give af because they're the first thing to pop up on Google so tons of clueless people go there simply because it's the first option they saw.
