a Reddit user speculated that Wayfair May be trafficking missing girls, drawing attention to furniture pieces that share names with missing people. These sell for 10k+ more dollars than other pieces that are the same.

wayfair denied this, but took down the listings.

I dont think they are. But I love a good conspiracy theory

edit: good is generous. This is good in the same way pizzagate is good. Its crazy and makes no sense but a decent chunk of social media feed is the usual people hyping this up as a huge trafficking ring.

I will say this, there is a noticeable uptick in missing people in my state, mostly women and kids. My amber alert on my phone goes off once or twice a week.

So human trafficking is going up pretty dramatically it seems.

Conversely, everyone being locked away at home is dramatically raising domestic violence murders, and the people involved are just hiding the bodies effectively.

This has been going on pre virus. Texas is a hot spot for missing people for the past year or so.

This makes no sense on so many levels. Its not like there aren't already places on the internet dedicated to selling illegal shit, what is the point of 'hiding' it on a normal website? If you were going to hide it on a normal site, why would you post listings using the actual names of missing girls? Since the only people that would be 'shopping' for them would have to be in the know already, you could call the things whatever you wanted. Also, these things are just posted in the open, so what is to stop other people from buying them? How do they know who wants to buy a person and who is just looking for overpriced furniture?

A lot of conspiracy theories seem to rely on the people involved being dumb enough to put evidence of their conspiracies in the open.

My momey is if it WERE illegal stuff happening it would be more ey laundering. Someone buy a 14k cabinet because they are stupid? More money for the bad guys, but it is a good way to transfer money illegally.

I was going to say, JFC, this is a stupid conspiracy, but that kinda skirts the line between batshit crazy and crazy enough to work.

Not even that, there's also the matter of it taking longer for somebody to notice a person missing when everybody is locked down and the person most in the position to report the crime is the murderer.

idk, there are criminals who infiltrate legitimate companies to use them as a cover for illegal operations. After all, he's not suggesting that the companies having their product shipped are on-board with these activities. Nor is it suggesting anybody specifically impacted.

It's pretty much common sense. It's simply not practical to rely entirely on smuggling-only transports to get illegal goods around, given the risk of having such vessels get caught by authorities. Hiding illegal goods amidst an otherwise-legal shipment is considerably more reliable, since then you pretty much just need to be lucky enough for your container to not be one they decide to look closely at. That's not to presume that the companies shipping legitimate stuff are complicit in the smuggling, since there's (generally) no reason to suspect that, but it does happen.

He exaggerated, but direct smuggling like that on a global scale is limited enough that neglecting it isn't unreasonable. If you're operating globally, you need to scale up to make it worthwhile, and scaling up smuggling ships makes it a lot harder to stay under the radar (literally, in some cases). Piggybacking on legal shipping is generally going to be the better option there, especially where there's enough international shipping happening these days that you can probably get away with your goods only having to cross one or two borders.
