Is MSG good for you?

No.

Is it worse than salt?

No.

If you're using salt in your cooking, there's no real reason why you can't harness MSG to make your food taste great.
I've bought a couple of pounds of it from bulk barn and it's a wonderfull flavour enhancer.

So why are people scared of MSG? There are 2 main reasons that kill MSG's PR.

First being it's name, it's literaly named after it's chemical compound Monosodium glutamate.
Do you think people would be more hesitant to use salt if it was called Sodium chloride? You can bet your ass they would be!
MSG is just as natural as salt is, it has sodium just like salt, and glutemic acid - that exists naturally in tomatoes, mushrooms, seaweed, red meat... it what gives them that savoury flavour.

The second and less innocent is that it was lambasted by the west mostly due to xenophobia against Asians.
It was marked as that Chinese-Japanese spice thing that causes headaches and makes you sick, they literaly called it the "Chinese restaurant syndrome".
This was pushed by many western salt lobbyists and bribed or just xenophobic (probably both) food scientists.
Needless to say that all these claims have been refuted by many scientific studies and MSG was proven to be no more or less hafmful than salt is by the FDA.

So if you're using salt, then you can use MSG. Just don't overdo it (just like salt).
Embrace the Umami and enjoy it responsibly!
