I feel like this is the real problem. It's not so much that people hate Rey, as much as it is that they hate the poorly-written movies she's in, and she's not really all that interesting character in her own right, so she becomes the target. She's effectively become the living avatar for people's disgust with the sequel trilogy as a whole.

It's the same way that a lot of the dislike and disgust with the prequel trilogy (but especially The Phantom Menace) crystallizes into "Jar-Jar is terrible! He's completely ruined the entire movie!" Yes, he's bad, but a lot of the pure hate against him is just misdirected hate over how terrible The Phantom Menace is as a whole. We could probably say that the pure venomous hate that Jake Lloyd and Hayden Christensen tend to get stems from the same sort of impulse.

It's a quirk of human psychology that we always look for villains to blame when things go wrong. We LOVE scapegoats, because it's always easier to blame a single person or group rather than trying to deconstruct systemic flaws and complex interactions.

If Rey was a more interesting character, people would probably transfer their dislike for the sequels to someone else (probably Finn), but because she's kind of bland, she makes a perfect target.

This is the thing people forget when they try and use the "Well, Luke was kind of boring too!" defense for Rey. The difference being, the original films were actually GOOD, and they also had Han Solo to distract us all from whatever flaws were there because he was being awesome enough for everyone.

As everyone is having this we thought out discussion, as soon as Luke was brought up all I could think about was the time playing the Star Wars TTRPG that a bad roll got my character knocked out by him in one hit. And I mean baby living with Aunt Very and Uncle Owen ass Luke.

It's a shame that haunts me to this day, despite being about a decade or a bit more ago.

The party also kinda went murder hobo on him, and found out after which amused the DM quite a bit.

Jar Jar goes out of his way to be annoying though, I mean if you cut him out of that movie entirely it probably gets a good bit better. He is a pointless character meant to sell toys to kids and make kids laugh, he's like an Ewok but cranked up to 11.

Rey's biggest problem is she is a Mary Sue, but hate to say it but in the world of Force users nearly all the super powerful ones can do force shit easily. Luke didn't get a ton of training to become a powerful Jedi either.

Equally baffling is that people don't like old Luke even though he and Dagobah Yoda are the same character.

Even though they deny it, I have a feeling a good part of it is due to her being a woman.

If it was a guy, I can picture these people being like oh MAN how cool was it seeing this guy go from a nobody to having the Force awaken inside of him and realizing his true potential?

People say Reys fans are toxic? Ive seen the complete opposite way more often

Luke didn't get a ton of training to become a powerful Jedi either. Think of it like Lebron James vs. a guy that studies basketball every waking moment from age 5 to age 25, LBJ will still be likely way better than average joe schmo that spends every waking moment trying to study basketball.

That's sort of the thing. In the first movie Luke tried to do Jedi stuff and failed and it wasn't until the end where he did stuff with the force; which amounted to either targeting with the force or changing the missiles direction with the force, at Ghost-Bi-wan's insistence. In ESB he struggles to pull his lightsaber to him and, while he's improved over the years of practice, he's clearly self-taught. It's not until he trains with Yoda, which is a decent chunk of the movie, that he really grows as a Jedi and he still has plenty of shortcomings even then. He loses to Vader and even loses his hand doing so. It's not until the third movie, a full two years of training with Yoda and practicing and everything else, that he can finally hold his own against Vader.

So yea... Saying 'Luke didn't get a ton of training' doesn't really answer anything because he fights and acts just like that. Instead of Rei doing stuff like pulling off Mind Tricks with little to no training at all.

Honestly, 2 years of training to become on par with the second most powerful force user is pretty bullshit too.

Especially since Vader has constantly been in combat and his skills shouldn't have dulled at all.

Vader wasn't trying to kill Luke, he was trying to turn him, so he wouldn't be using his full power.

Keylo had no reason to let Rey live during their first battle, and if he was so deep into the dark side that he could kill his father , he should have easily dispatched Rey despite his injury.

Kylo and Vader both ghosted their father figures like it was nothing and then had changes of heart about the main character because of bloodline reasons. It's the same thing.

Killing his father was an act of killing his attachment, which he felt made him weak. The thing is, he seemed to still feel remorse and sadness over it. It didn't seem to work the way he wanted, or at least not fully.

However, they established he also lacks focus immensely when he's too angry. And then proceeded to use it against him basically.

Vader didn't have a father , his father figure was Qui-gon more than its was Obi-wan .

Kylo had a father , not that they ever show us any previous feelings Kylo had for Han ; be they love , hate , rejection , disappointment , or abandonment.

When does Kylo learn of Rey's bloodline and where does that impact my point that he had no reason not to kill her that first encounter when he should clearly outclass her despite his injury?

Haven't seen the 3rd movie , after the first two I didn't hate Rey , I just didn't care.

If I've reached that point where if I'm no longer part of the target audience , I'll move on to other enjoyable ways I can spend my time .

Palpatine was Anakin's father figure.

I don't hate Rey, I actually like her but not as much as I would have if she was a well written character. There's no reason to get behind her and root for her as a character other than she's fighting the bad guys. And it doesn't help that they're more interesting than her as well.

I mean we have seen people use the force with 0 training though, they talk about how Anakin can only pilot pod racers because of the force. That no normal human has ever been able to drive a pod racer, and Anakin is the first one ever. Keep in mind this is a small child that has no clue about what the force is how to harness it. Anakin also seems to use the force to pilot a ship despite haphazardly a bit and help achieve victory in Phantom Menace.

I also think Rey had a lot of survival training because she was put onto a shit hole of a planet with no parents or guardians, and we don't know if anyone ever took care of her. Now this may not be force training but Luke was raised in a far better environment. Luke was given 3 meals a day and had his Aunt+Uncle who clearly cared about him. Meanwhile Rey had to bust her ass just to eat every day, and learn to defend herself.
