I used the same razor I shave with, but it seemed like it took way longer than it should.

I buzz it with clippers first. take a warm shower, clean your head well. either do it in shower or just after. razors and gel/cream really dont matter. the warm shower prep is essential tho.

I always buzz my head in a Mohawk style with clippers so I get as close to skin as possible. It took me much longer when I first started doing it. Now I can get the whole process done in like 20 minutes.

Sounds like repetition will eventually allow the process to take less time. It might go smoother and quicker next time.

Dudes I know who shave their head use a greasier shaving gel and a brand new razor so they don't get bumps.

I use a new cheaper razor everytime...bic single blade work best for me. once a week on average.

Not if it's a cheap razor. Though, I would use a good razor on my head if I was going for the smooth look.
