Current Events > Super Mario RPG is my #1 game of all time, but man is it unbalanced as FUCK!

I love the game to death but there are some serious balance issues with it >_> I'm just gonna list them all out

-There are tons of equipment that raise your physical attack but almost nothing that raises your magic attack, so by the end of the game, your regular attacks are usually doing more damage than your special attacks and thus there is almost no reason to use single target special attacks.

-Bowser is supposed to be the "power house" of the party and joins with fantastic stats and high attack, but his stat growth is terrible! So by the end of the game, all his stats are some of the lowest out of everyone and his attack stat is outclassed by the fucking mage of the party. Plus all his equipment is awful too. His best weapon only gives him +40 while everyone else's gives +70-90.

-In the very first town, there is a full revive item that you can buy for 5 coins, while full heal items cost like 40 coins at the end of the game. So its way cheaper to just have everyone go balls out and attack until they die and then just revive them with a super cheap item >_>

-Peach joins with a spell that heals the entire party to near max HP and heals all their status ailments for almost no MP cost, so it's easy to just spam that if youre too cheap to even buy those full heal items lol

-Geno gets a spell that literally raises all your stats by 50% for the entire fight and that also costs almost no MP too >_>

Even though though the game is piss easy cuz of these, I still love it and highly recommend it! I also can't wait for Geno to be in Smash

It's one of the most overrated games.

I loved it as a kid and it was one of the first games that got me into RPGs, but when I tried to replay it as an adult it was pretty meh and I just didn't see the appeal.

And it's not just a case of me being older because I still really enjoy other RPGs from that era like Chrono Trigger, FF3, Breath of Fire 2, Secret of Evermore etc.

Comparing it to a better game isn't really fair though. And tc, as a first time attempt at a mario rpg it was bound to have some kinks, it's got its fair share of problems.

But as a template for the paper mario games, not to mention the mario and luigi games, I appreciate super mario rpg for what it is. Without it, we might never have gotten the amazing paper mario or the fantastic superstar saga.

I got a free cartridge around 6 or 7 years ago but never played my copy. I rented it back in 1996 when I was young.

I can't stand JRPGs but it's one of the few that I've beaten. I thought it was a good game for a beginner or someone who sucks at RPGs.

I'm sure the game was balanced for a newbie. It plays that way. Some really good music in the game too if I remember correctly.

For some reason when I was a kid I thought it was an n64 game and was massively disappointed when I tried to go buy it.

For some reason when Super Mario Bros. was released in 1985, Nintendo decided to go by Princess Toadstool for the English name instead.

Star Hill feels like filler to pad out the number of stars in the game. It's kinda just on the way to the next town and they didn't even bother putting a boss there.

I still really love the atmosphere and have fun playing it as an adult. It's just a lot shorter than I remembered.

It's a good game with its own charm. I vastly prefer Paper Mario 64 though. I love the whole thing with Booster and the wedding. That was great.

I've never played those Mario and Luigi RPGs. Really weird because I was super into GBA and RPGs at that point in my life.

Even tho he sucks I like having Bowser on my team. Plus his 1 weapon where he literally just throws Mario at the enemies is priceless to watch

idk it just seemed like shortsighted planning for his character. Like they wanted him to be OP at the start to make people like using him and then balance him out with low stat growth and terrible equipment. But went waaaay too hard on that and didn't see how much it neutered his viability by the end of the game

I haven't played a Japanese game in English since the 8-bit era. So the FFT translation complaints were another one I never understood. I played it in English a bit to see what the fuss was about with the new translation and it seemed like a fine translation to me.

Though thinking about it, I must have played the original Mario in Japanese, because I remember finding out Koopa was called Bowser for the first time when I saw a friend playing Mario World and he got to the last world with the sign. I was super confused about who Bowser was. That's kind of strange to me since I certainly didn't know Japanese at that time...

I like Mega Man more but in the NES games they made his real name Rock and his alias Mega Man which was cool.

But then the PSP version retconned it and made his real name Mega; completely fucking up the Rock and Roll reference. That was so dumb >_>

peach and mallow have the best magic stat in the game and there is a gltich that was discovered only like 5 years ago to have her get mallows magic letting her make use of her high magic stat since she only gets one attack spell in the game and usually you reach that level towards the end.

but yeah the princess breaks the game
with her frying pan weapon she hits as hard as mario
her magic attack rivals mallows
and her healing makes it impossible to actually die

she has no weaknesses and can do everything

It took me 40 minutes to do it, but I beat Culex despite being ridiculously underpowered for the fight using just that strategy. He almost won a time or two with the Dark Star attack.
