Nothing is really done to quell it. The algorithm ensures that anything getting a lot of attention gets catapulted into popularity. Stupid and nonsensical subjects tend to get a lot of attention regardless - not just on Twitter, but in general - but having it hit trending and pushing comments corroborating it to the top makes it even worse.

For Twitter not being a free speech platform, there's a whole lot of nothing being done to stop the conspiracy hive minds.

I feel like Wayfair has done a pretty shitty job on curbing all of this shit though. Although obviously it's not like they could do much. Just feel like they could've given some explanations and shit.

Wayfair isn't the only one to do this. Walmart does it as well, usually for new items that haven't come in yet. They'll use absurdly high prices as place holder values until they actually get the product. It's a process Toy Hunters are well familiar with.
