Auto trades are definitely not the default and can seriously end up screwing things up if someone who JUST VOTED takes an auto trade and then that person doesn't even get a vote the subsequent hour. Oops.

I mean, the current convention is that default = not auto.
Most people do auto trades so I wouldn't object to switching the convention, saves people from having to specify auto every time. But it'd have to be commonly agreed on to avoid confusion. --- another place and time, without a great divide, and we could be flying deadly high ... Copied to Clipboard!

You'd still have that one lone person who would say "I never agreed to that" so yeah. As a rule of thumb, I do what Janus did unless the person says auto.
