I only heard bad things about it so my expectations were pretty low, so naturally it wasn't as bad as I expected. Actually I thought it was better than season 7, which is more of a disappointment the more I think about it. I kept waiting for that one scene, that one Dexter moment that was meme-worthy and made the show an entire joke, but it never came. Instead I just have a list of minor complaints.

  • It was definitely too short. It ended well but there just wasn't enough show.
  • In spite of not being enough show, the first two episodes were basically filler and not a whole lot happened in the finale either.
  • Bran basically told Theon to kill himself when Arya was about 30 seconds away from killing the Night King and he knew it would happen.
  • Jaime's little reversal came out of nowhere and served no real purpose to the story or his character.
  • Dany's "spontaneous" rampage. I think this is probably the one people have the most issue with, but actually it makes a lot of sense if you were paying attention to her journey throughout the show and noticed the signs that she wasn't everything she was presenting herself to be. When she said she was going to "break the wheel" that was the biggest giveaway that things weren't going to end well. The biggest problem is there just wasn't enough insight into her inner psyche which caused her to snap. In a lot of ways it's similar to Breaking Bad with Jesse's realization about the cigarette. It was the only time I had ever been confused watching the show.
  • Jon kind of got a raw deal, but it shows how like his father he is, and that "no good deed goes unpunished" in the GoT world. Doing the right thing doesn't always mean doing the popular thing. But in a way he was rewarded for his previous efforts by becoming one of the free folk.
  • They picked Bran? Really? I know he was the one with "the least want of the throne", but he's so damn passive. I don't think he's even capable of making any decisions.
Overall I liked how it ended, I just wished we had another episode or two.

The Cleganes both ended where they started, right into the fire. It's also symbolic in a way of the cycle of grudges and revenge.

But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.

UGH

At what point did she show signs that she is perfectly fine with murdering thousands of innocent men, women and children in a fit of rage?

I did like Dany's transformation even if on the surface it seemed a bit forced. When you think about it, Dany and Cersei were pretty much the same except they came from different circumstances. Cersei was born into privilege, Dany was sold into bondage on the other side of the world. Dany fought to establish herself as a force of power, Cersei fought to keep what she had. Both talked about burning cities to the ground. Both were extremely devoted mothers. Both were married to kings and were responsible for their deaths. The main difference between them is that Dany was never really presented with the hard choices, she pretty much got to where she was by slaughtering her enemies while liberating people in the process and gaining allies.

It's easy for us to think, and more importantly for Danaerys to think, that everything she did was out of altruism and that she was a liberator at heart due to her experience as a Dothraaki love slave. But she was always about destiny and revenge against her enemies from the beginning. Tyrion put it best when he said "everywhere she went, evil men died, and we cheered her for it." She got more powerful but also more corrupted the closer to the throne she got. With all that positive reinforcement as well as being a bloodborne ruler who is literally fireproof, wouldn't you think everything that you did must be right and justified? And then she got to Westeros, where it was the first time she had ever seen defeat. She lost two dragons, one got shot down right next to her, lost most of her armies, most of her navy, her most loyal bodyguard and friend, the lords and advisors were starting to doubt and question her methods and her claim to the throne, and her handmaiden best friend was beheaded right in front of her. I think it became clear to her for the first time that it was never about being a liberator or a good queen. I think even Drogon was starting to sense what she was, which is why he wasn't angry with John and torched the iron throne instead.

Aside from that I liked how Brienne completed Jaime's entry in the big book of deeds, cause I remember Joffrey mocking him about that after he became a cripple.

I always saw the Night King as more of a force of nature, and after his defeat his abilities would be harnessed by someone like Qyburn and/or Euron to take the throne. They were more sinister and calculated than Cersei who was perpetually driven by rage.

Arya killing the nightking was absolutly ridiculous and made no sense except for undeveloped shock value.
