Built my midrange PC in 2012 and a month ago after getting advice from GameFAQs both times and I've had zero issues so I don't see the problem. The 2012 PC can still play games, it's just slow primarily from all of the random shit I've installed over the last 8 years and not having and SSDs

If TC wants a comparable build, here's mine from a month ago

https://i.imgur.com/zDnjrnj.jpg (coffee mug placement wasn't intentional >_>)

CPU: Ryzen 9 3900x
Mobo: Gigabyte X570 Aorus Elite Wifi
GPU: GTX 2070 Super FTW3 Ultra
Air Cooler: Noctua NH-U9S
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 32 GB 3600 MHz
Storage: 1 TB WD Black SN750 (Windows 10 Pro OS) + 1 TB Samsung Evo 860 + 2 TB WD Blue 5400 RPM
Storage: 1 TB Samsung Evo 860 (Ubuntu)
Case: Lian Li O11DW Dynamic (Black)
PSU: EVGA Supernova 750 G+

Minus the extra accessories like the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and extra case fans + extra cpu fan (installed after above pic was taken), it ran me just north of $2000. Drop some storage and upgrade the graphics card to a 2080 that isn't overpriced and that's pretty much what TC would have.
That's a nice case. Why such a powerful CPU?

I also didn't know that emulators don't need a beefed up CPU nowadays after experiencing stutter city with Dolphin way back on an overclocked i5-2500k, but other than that I use my computer for a lot more than gaming. I set up the Ubuntu partition to use for work and programming which does involve some machine learning even though that's mostly GPU dependent. On Windows I have used Blender and Maya in the past, and I have recently downloaded other programs like Clip Studio Pro since I'm trying to get back into making art.

Those programs may not be CPU killers, but I didn't want to worry about a CPU being a bottleneck and I wanted the build in general to be relatively future proof like my 2012 one. But in your case, since you're getting a 2080 which second best gaming card someone could buy right now, I figure why not make the rest of your components like RAM and CPU match the tier

The b550 boards are a relatively new architecture. It's still the AM4 platform, but this is an entirely new generation of future compatibility with the socket. There will be bugs and stability issues with the motherboard until enough BIOS firmware updates get released that address stability issues. Also, make sure to check out the QVL for that motherboard, just so you don't run into compatibility issues with your chosen RAM.

Much better than the original, but honestly I'd ditch the water cooler and just keep the fan. Honestly you don't need the extra fan either. I have the same setup and my PC rarely gets hot. I would say one or the other. You don't need both.

This is vary similar to my build

Edit- I'll also say that the 2080s is massively overpriced when you can get a 2070s for much cheaper for a very little performance sacrifice. I got the 2060s and I'm still able to run most games on the highest settings. Looking back at it, I should have gotten the 2070s.

It's good to future proof though, but that's just my preference.

It's worth it if it's within your budget. You could minmax every penny and there will always be someone nitpicking. As for the motherboard I'd probably just spend a few days searching and reading up on the b550s and what issues you could run into then see if they're worth dealing with.

I didn't say it was bad, only that you should wait for BIOS firmware updates to improve stability. If you're comfortable with wonky shit, then go ahead and stay with b550. Personally, I find they are overpriced right now, because they are new. ASrock boards are typically the lower end budget build boards, but their b550 is $150 USD. That's at least $40 above what b450 is.

If you're not interested in 3rd gen Ryzen (4000 series), then there's nothing wrong with a b450 board. Stock may never recover though, because board manufacturers are strongly incentivised to push new hardware over old. B550 is still cheaper than X570, but the difference in feature suites between the two platforms isn't worth paying more for B550, when you can get an X570 board with more features and better power delivery for just a little bit more.

So the x570 doesnt have these issues? I dont know shit about motherboards. If a b550 is a hassle, I dont need it.

So the x570 doesnt have these issues? I dont know shit about motherboards. If a b550 is a hassle, I dont need it.

X570 is relatively stable, but has its own issues, namely the active cooler on the chipset, which are usually relatively cheaply made fans that offer another point of failure on the motherboard. B550 has a passive cooler (heatsinks) which utilise the air drawn in from the intake fans to pull heat away from the chipset.

Another point of consideration is how both motherboards split up PCIe lanes. It won't matter to anybody but the most anal power user people, but X570 has more PCIe lanes than B550. You still get your typical x16 slot in B550, but PCIe expansion slots split up the lanes. I can't remember the exact specifics, but it likely won't mean jack fuck to you.

Basically, it's like this:

B550: More expensive than it ought to be, fewer features than X570, passive cooling on the chipset, fewer PCIe lanes, will be a bit unstable until BIOS revisions address it.

X570: Most expensive, full suite of capabilities, active cooler on the chipset, more stable because it's been out longer.

I would go with B550 if it were cheaper. I'm somewhat of a power user, so I'd be okay with having to deal with the odd squibble. All that matters is your budget, though.

There is that possibility. Computers will BSOD if they run into a conflict. I'm not saying don't go for it, but early adopters have to be comfortable with flashing their BIOS. If you don't want to do that, I suggest waiting about 4 months, or getting X570.

These are Canadian prices on Newegg. The cheapest B550 boards are micro ATX boards for $130, but are pretty feature bare. That picture contains the first B550 boards I would entertain buying.

The same board, but different chipsets. $10 more. Why would you even go B550 at this point?

You'll be fine if you get a 650w 80 + gold certified PSU. I'm a big fan of modular PSUs, but they're more expensive. Semi modular would do just fine. I wouldn't worry too hard about not having a 2080 in your system. A 2070 will be just fine enough. Other than that, your PC looks relatively good.

I mean, thats not the point, but ok. Youre spending $1k on a gpu that will be equivalent to an ampere card at half the cost.

I just hope you arent expecting 4K ultra or something with that beyond the next year or two.

edit: didnt see you changed to a cheaper 2080, but still, an equivalent ampere card will cost a good chunk less and come with better rtx support if you care about that at all

I recently made one. The issue I had was the GPU has its own HDMI port, but out of the box all the ports had plugs for protection, and I thought those plugs were something to keep on the brackets when you plug it in. Using the HDMI part on the MOBO didn't give a signal to the monitor. Took me a good while to figure out that was the issue.

And its also easier (the way my case was laid out at least) to plug all your plugs into the PSU before you put the PSU in its slot on the case, that way all you gotta do is run the cords to their respective places. Trying to plug them into the PSU afterwards can be difficult if the PSU slot is in kind of a hard to reach place

Do you plan on getting a 1440p 120Hz monitor in the next 5 years?

I didn't realize that you only wanted to play at 1080p and 60fps on a TV monitor. Your build is overkill tbh.

If all you want is 1080p 60fps than 2060s is all you need. You could even go lower than that to a 1660ti tbh. If all you're going to do is play on a TV monitor there's no reason to ball out that hard since you will never use the system to it's max potential.

This guy has a good video on it already.
https://youtu.be/rdNwP9TOPwE

However, if you do plan on getting a better display then keep your current build. Sorry for the bounce back and forth, but I'm sure if people would had known you were playing on a TV monitor they would have recommended you accordingly.

Worst case scenario is that the key you get has already been used and you're out $8 until you let the seller know
