Okay, and WHO says masks are unnecessary when exercising with proper social distancing and that they're a detriment when exercising. And it's in a place where everyone is wiping things down and being cleaner than ever, as well as the actual facilities themselves.

Why are you so against this to an obnoxiously smug degree?
The WHO has been extremely slow to reconsider its initial position on masks. It took them until early June to recommend them for general use. They are not the definitive authority on all covid advice, and there is certainly not a general consensus among public health experts that distancing without masks is enough to make exercise safe indoors.

The problem, I would say, is that he's lumping us in with the buffoons.

I cannot control anyone else's decisions, but I can control my own.

The rules and restrictions exist because there are people who are stupid and need to be protected from themselves. (Or at the very least, everyone else needs to be protected from.) They are the people who won't even follow the rules, and we have to exercise repercussions on in order to even provoke any semblance of compliance. They're the Karens who cry on the floor of Target. They're the protestors who attend rallies without a mask. They're the angry white guys who storm the state assembly and accost their legislators over closing the state. Simply put, they're the idiots who don't see the situation and don't consider who they're hurting or how.

My state reopened businesses, including gyms, in my county last week. I have no control over that. I would not disagree with anyone who told me that they shouldn't be open, that coronavirus cases in my state spiked 25% last week after being fairly stable for so long, that the rules controlling the least common denominators and bad apples of the world are being too relaxed.

But I do have control over how I conduct myself. I have control over whether or not I maintain social distancing. I have control over whether I wipe down surfaces and maintain sanitary practices and stop every fifteen minutes to go wash my hands. And I have control over the fact that I am otherwise not putting myself or anyone else at risk, and consequently further spreading the virus....and consequently, I have control over whether or not I decide that the restrictions that are in place are too confining and therefore I need to take my energy elsewhere.

Basically all I'm hearing is "anyone who attends the gym is unilaterally a buffoon, mask or not, but especially no mask." And frankly, that's insulting. There are plenty of buffoons out there, but I have done my best to not be one of them.

Is this the same science that says masks don't make it harder to breathe and that it's all in your head that is directly contradicted by WHO (and the fact I can't even find an article stating this at all)?

The WHO has a large campaign dedicated to exercise at home.

Beyond that, as you may have noticed in the image you linked earlier, they are encouraging outdoor exercise.

Your assertion that they approve of no masks in an indoor gym environment is merely a misrepresentation.

Btw I know at least around here, a lot of local gyms are converting some of their outdoor space to gym space. My advice would be to see if anywhere around you is making the conversation. Could give you a little something to do if you can find one.

Thank you for the constructive advice. My gym doesn't have any outdoor space, and I don't know of any that do, but I can at least look into it.

What in the world makes you think they're encouraging outdoor exercise because they picked an image of people outside?

This is next level.

Sorry I hit F5 so I lost a post so this might seem incomplete because I had to retype it.

I don't mean to lump you in with the buffoons, most of us at this point are very much a victim of stupider people keeping this virus thing dragging far longer than we needed up.

I still will stand by the idea that right now no one should be going to a gym without a mask. Yes, I get it, the government is leaving that choice on the table for you. Its still a poor choice. Yes, we can take precautions, but science is showing more and more that wearing a damn mask indoors is the single best thing we can do to prevent spread of the virus aside simply staying at home. Yes we can take precautions, they help, but they also aren't as effective as just wearing a mask. It might be uncomfortable, it might make you feel like you have to breathe harder, but its so damn effective and we're still so fucked with this virus that it really is just a minor inconvenience compared to the benefits. You might not be able to exercise as hard as normal while adjusting, but again, minor inconvenience.

Really, don't mean to imply you are a buffoon or whatever. Just the government left a bad choice on the table and I would say you took it. You don't have to be dumb to make a bad choice. Its mostly our governments fault for not having proper nationalized restrictions. Especially after 4 months. Temptation sucks.

No shade on you, but you can't control whether you maintain social distancing as long as others exist. Like, you don't need to be a buffoon, you just need some other buffoon to come too close to you while you're in the middle of an exercise and can't quickly back off to a safe distance. Or maybe the workout itself is safe but you encounter someone who doesn't give you space as you're entering/exiting. Or maybe you all maintain literally six feet of distance but someone's a superspreader and you catch it at eight feet.

Basically I think you put too much trust in other people if you expect all your fellow gym-goers not to be buffoons.

My stance is just like.....it's so easy to just NOT go to the gym. I get that the gym itself is like a motivation to work out and keep going but like, these current circumstances should really overwrite that. Sure you probably won't get the most IDEAL workout, but you can get the basics of staying healthy with simply exercising outside of a gym and basic equipment you can purchase and keep home. This might sound a bit ridiculous but if you have a Switch, Ring Fit Adventure is a nice workout you can do and flexible! In addition to weights you can have and what not. I just don't really get the NEED to go to a gym during these times when it's really such a privileged activity that can be done elsewhere and in other ways.

I totally understand the need to go to a gym. Before the pandemic I went four times a week and it was an essential part of my routine. The endorphins from working out are real and addicting. If you live in a place where you're not blessed with outdoor space, and if you live in a tiny apartment or something, the gym is the only viable alternative for a real workout. And yeah, last I checked Ring Fit is impossible to find or really expensive.

But yeah, if you're gonna go you gotta wear a mask and tone the exertion down accordingly.

I live in NYC and refuse to wear a mask specifically because red told me to

Holy shit wtf is going on in this topic.

A cloth mask feels uncomfortable as fuck, but it wont cause you to faint if you work out in it, lmao why are people saying this?

When Im on base where masks are mandatory, every single person you see jogging is wearing a mask in 90 degree Florida heat, and if they were passing out the guidance would change.

Reds comment of stay the fuck inside or whatever was silly, but the counter-swing the other way is even sillier because his comment is harmlessannoying at worstwhile not wearing a mask can potentially spread a virus that has killed people.

Nobody has said that in this topic.

You're putting hyperbolic words into people's mouths so you can make a point that doesn't exist and treat people making reasonable points like idiots. People's problems are that it's harder to breath with a mask on, which is true (despite red saying it isn't), and that they would prefer not to work out with a mask on, and WHO encourages people not to work out with masks on.

Nobody has said they will pass out with a mask on. I have no idea what brought you to this conclusion.

Not only did someone say wearing a mask could cause fainting, but you literally replied to that post. Yes, the masks people generally choose to wear to the gym are special training masks, but he brought it up to respond to Red talking about regular masks.

I dont know why youre so hostile to me about my comment, you getting enough oxygen, bro?

Hold up. You're talking about the person who was literally saying that crazy people purposefully suffocate themselves with particular masks? It's pretty obvious the people who would be trying to simulate low oxygen flow won't be wearing a simple cloth mask, so you'll have to forgive my confusion.

Six days in and I've noticed more people wearing masks. It's like 75% of the people here now. I've also just noticed that the gym requires masks upon entry, but I guess some people ignore that once they're inside.

Getting quite acclimated to masked cardio.

I went to my climbing gym last week. It's masks 100% of the time, and I did not see anyone disobeying. There's a weights/cardio section too but it had like 2 people max. If you're going there it's for the climbing so that makes sense. Can't use bathrooms/changing rooms though.
