going to have to go with no.

it's not that it's been 100% bad or that there haven't been times that i greatly enjoyed being here but yeah, overall, i wouldn't say my past 16 years on this board have been good for my mental health. i also think it's turned me into a more unpleasant person.

Absolutely. Board 8 was "there" for me when i was struggling with some of the worst periods of my life. It gave me a place to get away from some really nasty things that were happening and that escape kept me somewhat sane

Now its a place where i can pop in and out of whenever i am bored or need to quick get away from much smaller stressors when they occur

Yes. Even just as an often-lurker, board 8 helps me feel like I have a "home", even at times when I moved long distances, or just any time I am far away from home but still have access to my phone/laptop, or have gone through uncertain life circumstances. It's a constant in my life and helps ground me.

I think the positives outweigh the negatives, but here's some of my personal ones

Positives:
This is by far the best place to talk about niche things. Everyone I know irl doesn't care about Final Fantasy or Ace Attorney, so it's really nice to be able to discuss interests here. Plus it's been a great way to discover new things. I also love the sense of community, everyone has their different quirks and it's always a treat seeing a game announcement and thinking, "Oh boy I can't wait to see what the Board says about this." Plus even though I've been here less time then most, seeing all these iconic 'Board 8 moments' is a lot of fun.

Negatives:
I have two big ones. Firstly I feel like I can get way too invested in 'just a message board'. Like I've been in the middle of rushes at work and gone 'Oh shit, I have to stop and save Quina.' So it's pretty unhealthy in that regard. The other is, I feel like the Board is generally critical of a lot of things and I think it's kind of made it hard for me to enjoy casual things. To the point where It's kind of hard to keep me entertained if I feel like it's not very well made. That said both of these things are better than the worst of Facebook, so I'm pretty happy here.

Had some good times here, got some people I share interests with.

Able to get things off my chest in the mental health topic with surprisingly mature, rational people

Enjoying a few Save mys.

I've seen people at new angles, put issues aside with people I weren't the best of friends with, Saw some people for what they really are.

Good outweighs the bad and there was a long stretch of bad for me.

I'm really thankful for B8 I included it in my undergraduate thesis acknowledgements page lol.

It motivated me to write and draw (and obviously consume media and play games). It improved my English and internet etiquette (previously I frequented CE which is just...yeesh). I made a lot of friends and really great acquaintances/boardmates.
This is where I first came out, basically, and it's still a safe haven where I can geek out about the most obscure topics and there'd be at least two or three people who know what I talk about.

This.

When I was younger, Board 8 was my online life. And I had problems here. I had friends, but also enemies, and those enemies weren't good for my mental health. But as an adult, it's been better because of a few good friends I've made that made positive impacts on my life.

Those people are the positives of this board for me (rather than the board itself) and it's been huge. I've flown a few times to see a friend I met here and it's been great. A group of friends I have IRL would have never happened if it weren't for another friend. I'm not sure the people involved want me to say who they are (but they're welcome to say who they are if they want) but it means so much.

In recent years, I've been tackling depression and anxiety more publicly and the board has been supportive of that. It's been great to see and it has saved my life. But I do believe that, at the same time, some of my issues were worsened by the more toxic members of the board and the impacts last to this day since those things pile up.

So overall? It hasn't been healthy. But there are some awesome people that make it worth it nonetheless.

Not a very social person, this lets me have a little bit of an outlet to talk about dumb stuff and even some important stuff!
Also not being just a video game board, I actually hear a lot of news form this place too.

Also if I wasn't wasting time occasionally I'd just be wasting time doing something else. People with time-wasting habits will probably find new ones.

Absolutely. It's nice having a little online community, separate from my day to day life, loosely focused around something so trivial.

I don't have close friends on the board, but I think if i were really in trouble i could come here for help or advice.

The board has gotten on my nerves at times, but that's how every community is. The previous generation would complain about "that person" at church, or the bar, or the pottery club. At least here there's a block button.
