Everyone pretty much hates Game of Thrones now or its kind of a joke.

I can't imagine who wouldn't think Game of Thrones isn't a joke after that last season, but when last I checked A Song of Ice and Fire was still highly regarded. It's just that people are gradually losing faith that the author will ever finish writing the series.

I must admit, with GRRM's age and physicality, and the fact that he's stalling so hard and keeps releasing the side stories no one ever asked for I wouldn't be surprised if the seventh book had to be released posthumously if it's ever even released period. I STILL HAVE HOPE FOR WINDS OF WINTER THOUGH. IT'S COMING, Y'ALL. YOU JUST GOTTA BELIEVE!

I'm sure this book will come out some day. Next year though? Eh, not sold on that. It will happen eventually though, if nothing else GRRM will leave enough of it behind if he dies for someone to finish it in reasonable form. The seventh book though, *that* I have no hope for, and I also don't really buy he can finish up this story in "only" two books in a satisfactory way

Yep. His style suited WoT pretty damn well (outside of maybe Mat for whatever reason) but I don't think would work for the more lurid reality of Westeros.

I'll believe it when I see it. DnD got all the flak that GRRM should have eaten for GoT season 8.

I didn't hear anyone complaining about the writing or the show when DnD were making the first six seasons. It's on Martin for not finishing the books up.

I stopped watching after the fifth season was as bad as it was and it was still well within book material.

I'm pretty sure I remember Sanderson saying he wouldn't be interested in finishing up ASoIaF. It was a little too dark to match his style and he wouldn't be a good fit.

Read that blog in question, here were my thoughts:

Its going to be a huge book, and I still have a long way to go.

......youve had 9 years to write it and you had a dozen or so chapters already done that didnt make Dance. How do you still have a long way to go???

I can always visit Wellington next year, when I hope that both Covid-19 and THE WINDS OF WINTER will be done.

So we arent getting Winds done this year. Got it.

Way way back in 1999, when I was deep in the writing of A STORM OF SWORDS, I was averaging about 150 pages of manuscript a month. I fear I shall never recapture that pace again.

So were never getting Dream and our only actual resolution to these wonderful characters and story is the hack job the HBO series put together.

His post was supposed to make me optimistic, but Im now just so cynical that I even wonder if we get Winds at all at this point

Man it's not even a question to me of "is it really going to come out" and "will it be good." If it does come out, I'll probably read and enjoy it! But I read the series 8 years ago and the show has basically let me get over the hype. It's just barely worth thinking about.

Martin's franchise had its time. I stan Sanderson and Jemisin now.

Imagine starting the next big thing and then letting it pass you by. No one cares anymore by this point.

I still care, and I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy it. But it has been so long since I read A Dance of Dragons, and it's no longer one of those series I eagerly anticipate after all the delays.

Now, I look forward more to authors like Sanderson, Abercrombie, or Lawrence that write at a reasonable rate.

That's probably tinfoil hat parsing of his words, but I could see the pandemic playing a role in his decision to hold back the manuscript.

Timeframe-wise? It was still 90% within Feast and Dance. They awkwardly changed a bunch of shit and had sloppy resolutions, but that's my point.

That's the same tinfoil hat that predicted he was holding onto it until S8 was done. When everyone is stuck at home, releasing a book could only be useful.
