i just remembered this existed again

Hello. Do you hate anxiety, stress-induced mental illness and furious angst but love arguing for hours on which characters can beat others in a fight? I don't, but I know other people do!

like two fucking years ago I took nominations for characters to compete in a Mercs-like but definitely NOT MERCS bracket-based character battle. This will be fairly straightforward. I've got brackets. I've got characters. I've got descriptions. I've got pictures*. I post a topic and people argue which featured character would win the fight, and then people vote. Easy, and hopefully not divisive. This will start idk in like a week probably. I'll try to post the topic every evening at let's say 5.

Brackets are mostly randomized with characters that seemed to be at the bottom or top of their divisions getting better seed (or worse seeds, technically, but it's self-consistent within each bracket so it doesn't matter). If anybody wants to help me make better brackets, sure.

*I don't actually have pictures they all died with imgtc but i can find them again

I can't personally attest to this, but I've heard that Doom Eternal cranked up the Doom Slayer's power level all out of proportion with where it was before. If true, you should probably either specify he's as seen in Doom 2016, or swap him with Mewtwo/Popeye.

Otherwise, I'm hyped to ...probably not even argue for my characters or maybe even vote in general!

Tag. Also yeah Eternal reveals Doom Guy is busted. Though then again I think it was confirmed that all DOOM WADs were canon when 2016 came out and that alone makes him pretty busted. Plus I mean...he would have still had the general power from Eternal during 2016 anyway.

most of these brackets are insane mismatches. but i'm too much of nerd and used to frequent a community dedicated to listing and calculating character feats..so i'm not sure i should start pointing out this stuff as it might ruin the tournament...

In my opinion, a few of the matches should be hilarious stomps or counters, but if they're all goofy it would get boring fast. If I tried making a good bracket I'd probably drop this again for another half a year. I'd gladly take advice to make it better

Well...i can try to separate these characters in tiers ranked by attack potency (peak human, city level, planet level, solar system level, etc) if you want. then you could use the list to adjust the brackets as you see fit.

i dont think that necessarily ruins results as attack potency by itself doesn't really usually determine who beats who (for example maybe a character that can blow up a planet has no answers to mental attacks and loses to a regular guy with mind powers) , but it'll at least avoid some trully horrifying mismatches

it'll probably take just a few hours and im bored anyways.

you can move people around to end up with a good number of characters in each bracket. or maybe join 2 of them together or something, i dunno.

*About Giorno, that character has a particular ability called Gold Experience Requiem that's almost impossible to argue against, so i remember topics involving him were quickly closed and in some places he ended up banned outright from discussions.

if you do put him in the tourney, i suggest putting him in the most powerful bracket you make.

Gold Experience Requiem isn't allowed. The two Deaths are Supernatural and Discworld. The Franchises are on the sheet.

a lot of the characters placements that might seem weird are from scaling to other characters

for example, Shadow the Hedgehog has no universal or above feats, but can be partly scaled to a character that does (Solaris)

Rainbow Dash is one such case too.

Yeah but Shadow had help and scaling can make things really weird at times. Like say Villain A is going around obliterating the country side and Hero B comes along with his particular arsenal and manages to defeat em. Just because the Hero beat the Villain doesn't mean the Hero is capable of creating similar scales of damage with his particular arsenal.

Reminder that the Google doc in the opening post lists where every character is from. You don't have to just guess which ______ is the one in the contest.

That said, I'm mostly fine with NFUN's tiers. There are probably a few that need changed (for example, Witch King can't be hurt through normal means and shouldn't be in Mid tier), but most of them are close enough.

that'd fall under hax category. like the guy using mental powers example i gave earlier.its why i said just ranking them by attack potency doesn't give away the results.

generally the requirement i put for being in a tier is "capable of causing this much destruction, OR capable of harming a being with this level of durability, with sheer attack power".

for example, we know namek saga Frieza has at the very least planetary level durability (survived namek blowing up in his face while cut in half and unconscious). so if you're able to kill Frieza through sheer raw power, your attack potency must be at least above planet level, regardless of actually blowing up planets when you attack.

Maybe it's the pony.mov incarnation of Rainbow Dash.

Also, I didn't notice there was an Asobi Asobase nomination. It's a gag, slice of life manga about a high school girl club. None of them have special powers or combat powers...
Except for the butler who can shoot laser out of his ass, but it wasn't him that was nominated

Battler is also a tricky one since his power ranges from normal teen guy to reality-constructing wizard though even as the latter he's not the strongest in his series.

i don't understand how chara can do anything against non-monsters. she can absolutely destroy them because they're harmed by hate, but otherwise she's just a human child

I think it depends if Chara can use save points. That's kind of a hax ability, being able to fight the same battle over and over until you win.

Last chance: should Rand be swapped into Broken tier? I don't know the non-meta characters well enough to be sure of their placement above him. Magneto seems kind of fishy being there, but as far as I can tell his powers aren't really bounded because the authors don't understand physics and just let him do anything tangentially related to magnetism for the plot

Balefire feels like kind of a bad fit for high but I guess he doesn't fit in broken either. Not like he's invincible there anyway, just glancing over the list Kirby could probably spit it back at him.

If it hits somebody's arm it counts for the whole. Not sure what you mean by concepts. If somebody says or creates something, and then gets hit with enough balefire to be erased to before when he did that, those things would never have been made... but wouldn't be forgotten? A character dies and gets revived by balefire undoing his death, and I know for a fact that he doesn't remember dying, and that the person who ended up saving him does remember it, but I don't recall if anybody else does. I think they do, but dismissed it as a mistake. It's been a while since I read the books

There's a reason it's forbidden. Paradoxes like this literally create cracks in the Universe. I'd say that generally, yeah, that wouldn't kill somebody. Rand especially, since fate to an extant is bent towards his will.

The three solutions I see are 1, nerf him by removing balefire, 2, buff him by letting him use the Choedan Kal so that he's for sure Broken, or 3, just swap him with a Broken character with no changes. The issue with the former is that that's mostly a nerf for him in Broken; I don't think he'd need to resort to balefire to defeat anybody in Hard, at least not anybody with physical bodies that they need, and even the forces and spirits he has Weaving I could buy working on. The other choices depend on how strong he is relative to the Broken characters. I could maybe see him just being a better match in Broken than Magneto or someone based on how their powers would interact with opponents rather than raw strength, and thus needing the Choedan Kal to compete. Again, I don't know enough to make the call.
