Tied for boardtop and would have won outright if england didn't give away all of his stuff the last turn to Germany because he was mad I backstabbed him.

Won the game solely on me leaking a fake plan to turkey who told austria which let me walk untouched into an austrian center as he defended the spot I said I was going to attack

@masterplum having played in that style of play, would you rather just do a format like that (play for 4-ish hours and call it) as opposed to arranging a sort of indefinite repeating game? the former is much simpler to plan and execute.

I don't know if I can do a whole sitting game, but submitting orders every few hours and whatnot is quite manageable.

Alternatively, we could start with a gunboat game (no communication allowed, moves only) and have 12 hour deadlines. Turns don't have to take 12 hours though, there's a checkbox which will go ahead and adjudicate the turn if everyone checks it. So you could still have a few turns per day if people feel like it, but you'd always have a cushion if you needed time. Can also make countries anonymous so you don't meta who is who.

Gunboat diplomacy sounds kind of crappy to me, but we could try it.

Turns every few hours seems like it would make communicating really tough.

When we did it last time with backstabbr deadlines for turns could be shorter, but the communication through it was fine and ongoing.

Well that's the argument for gunboat, lol

I don't mind either way, just tossing out ideas. Gunboat is pretty fun, imo. You can still communicate quite a bit with your orders. Like if you would be holding a unit in place, you can instead write an invalid support order to indicate your intentions. For example, as Germany you move your fleet to Denmark in Spring '01. Then, after deciding to allow Russia into Sweden, in the Fall you order Denmark supports MAO (or wherever the French fleet is) to Lvp, suggesting to France " build a fleet and let's go get England".

Totally different vibe, but fun in its own right.

Though will say, kinda liked the 4 hour game idea.

Arguably, the best way to play gunboat is what they call speedboat, which is when you play the game from start to finish in one sitting, but without communicating who is which country. You can still have a discord chat for banter or whatever, just nothing specific. The motto would be to play fast, not necessarily well. Everyone puts moves in as quickly as possible (3-5 minutes) and the game moves super quickly.

You might be surprised. I mean, when you start to make your choice of what to build, you will naturally consider what other countries are likely to build. And the basic rule is you can't build a new unit in a territory that is already occupied. So it's probably more apparent in the moment than I made it sound.

Like, well, I don't have to even consider England building a fleet in Lvp in my calculations because they literally can't, because there is an army there. When you don't have negotiations to establish trust verbally, you find other ways to communicate.

Well, after I actually get the gist for the game after playing it I'd probably understand, but for my first game I'm not sure how it'd go.

I think the best placement is something like 4% more likely to win than the worst one

A lot of it has to do with your negotiation tactics as well

for example, if youre playing as Italy, it might not make sense to attack Austria and France

Also worth noting that chances of winning don't necessarily correlate to chances of being eliminated. England and Turkey are often easy to defend ad infinitum (because they are in the corners), but they are also difficult to achieve a solo victory with (because they are in the corners).

I topped the board as Russia, thanks largely to the fact Austria and Italy had personality conflicts with deep roots.
