Its going to be a casual watchthrough, I'm not gonna marathon it nor am I gonna comment play by play each episode either, but I think its finally gonna happen

I've watched bits and parts of each arc up to the Enies Lobby arc. I watched most of the fights in that one like 10 years ago

I just watched them recruit Usopp

From the start to here I HAVE watched all the way through before, so its retreading old grounds to get familiar again ( I think I even owned the DVDs to these at one point)

Did this show simply not have a budget at first?

Theres alot of instances where they display distance by enlarging or shrinking an image

or when something happens, they cut away to a static shot of a building then cut back after the action is done

or they resort to just having stills, yet the characters are still talking

I could go on, its just Jarring when they randomly cut a corner like this lol

Also I liked how Gaimon was really quick to draw a gun on Luffy. Hes probably dropped some pirates before and had his animals eat them

So we got Buggy, Hawkeye, hell Shanks himself, the Arlong Pirates

what are so many Grand Line pirates doing at Level 1? Isn't it super out of the way to go BACK to East Blue? It just doesn't make sense

The show never had a budget. I'm actually not sure it has a budget now, either, they just got some really fantastic and talented animators working in it that can get the job done.

Basically everything after Ennies Lobby all the way up until the current arc is...difficult to even call an anime, TBQH, other than a handful of specific scenes.

I love pre time skip One Piece, but pacing after a certain point becomes embarrassing.

The show was always fine back then? It's just 20 years old. I watched up until Enies Lobby and it improves as animation improved over time, but it wasn't bad compared to other anime at the time. I dropped it after that arc because of how much episodes started needing to be stretched though which is definitely a problem. Not sure when the budget got cut beyond that, but it must have happened at some point because ExTha made a topic awhile ago raving about how good the Dogtooth fight was but man that animation was godawful.

Yes, that's basically where it all went to shit. That's when the show went widecreen/HD. They managed to do a decent job of holding on during that arc because of it's importance, but the cracks were already starting to show. Don't forget the random filler stories inserted during the airing of that arc literally out of nowhere in the middle of events.

And yes, the Dogtooth fight receiving so much praise at the time goes to show how low the standards had gotten.

One of the episodes in Nami's arc where she asks Luffy for help is one of my favourite episodes of any show ever. I rewatch it all the time. It's phenomenal.
