Im 3/4 of the way into the season in NBA 2k20, 3rd seed in the west and 3rd overall. Random cutscene after losing one game, the CPU says my services are no longer required or some shit. So effectively game over, permanently.

How in the fuck can this be considered an actual feature in a game? Why is 2K so bad

Something similar happened with NBA 2k18 where the same dialogue popped up, but there was the option to "beg" for your job back using in game virtual currency, so if you have no virtual currency you can buy some and the option unlocks.

So they effectively held your save game for ransom with potentially real money. How is this even allowed to happen

That's a terrible feature. Back up your saves then.

Worst I had was back in the PS1 days I got one of those multi page memory cards. The frickin' thing... Was most of the way through disc 2 of FF7 and had all the weapons unlocked in Soul Blade (plus other games), then the shit decides to erase everything.

I had a third-party memory card on PS1 that up and erased EVERYTHING on my memory card one day. I was a kid and didn't have a concept of this stuff so this was the only memory card I ever used.
I think I cried for quite a few days when I lost about 3 years of game saves, lol

I had one of the first-party 1019 Gamecube memory cards randomly corrupt on me one day. I was less than happy about that, given that it had basically everything on it. That's at least a hardware failure, though, and not the game being deliberately programmed to murder your progress if you don't pay up. 2K is trash.
