They said I had to finance the new car as per company policy because they only want people with good credit, let the payment run for a month, then I can come back and pay the car in full with cash.

Are they just bs'ing or what? I've bought cars at the same dealership before but they were used cars and were fine with letting me pay in cash.

Sounds very shady, I'd try a different dealership if I were you.

Sounds shady .

EDITED TO ADD : Wow two people called it shady at once. So I guess that tells you what it is TC.

They make money with leasing, they dont like selling cars in full with cash unless its a luxury car.

Cash is legal tender. If they can't take that, a cashier's check would also work.

It's a scam.

Well the payment thing might not be--I dunno about that. But the buying new thing definitely is.

It's shady and they're BSing you, don't be afraid to walk away from this dealership. If you're willing to walk away 99% of the time they'll cave, and if they don't, you're being scammed. They want you to finance so you can pay all kinds of extra fees and shit.

I feel like the missing part here is about a price.

Sometimes financing is part of a price. I could see a dealer saying no to a price if someone comes in with cash but if they outright are just not selling it to you in cash that seems shady.

I've had something similar happen twice.

I went to buy a S7 Edge when it was brand new. I had the cash (in the form of my debit card.) Went to the ATT store, picked out what I wanted, and went to check out. They asked me how I wanted to finance it, I said, no financing please. I'm paying for it all right now. They said I had to finance it. I was sort of stunned. I asked guy waiting on me if he was seriously going to let me walk out the door when I had the money right now. He said it was against policy. I left, went to Bust Buy a day later, and just bought the phone on my debit card.

Last year, I was buying a S10+ the same way. I skipped the ATT store and went straight to the best buy. They told me the same thing, I had to finance it. But they offered me a reasonable solution: finance like 10 dollars and just pay to ATT when I got home. So, that's what I did.

I don't really understand it, I'm sure they must make more money somehow.

I do understand why they may be squeamish of handling sacks of cash though. Handling large sums of cash requires lots of paperwork.

Went through similar things when I last got a phone. The guy at the Verizon store told me it's to protect the customer in case you don't like the phone. That's bullshit. I couldn't pay off my phone for 90 days because of that dumbassery.

A company can refuse you business for whatever reason they want (as long as it's not discriminatory), as much as you, the customer, cna choose to not shop there.

So go somewhere else.
