They didnt do their jobs. Thats what Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Tuesday about Mayor Bill de Blasio and the NYPD. The governor says the looting and property damage done in the city last night was inexcusable. It was a disgrace, Cuomo said. He used just four words to sum up his evaluation of Mayor de Blasios handling of the protests that have roiled the city and caused untold millions of property damage and looting. Then he used seven more. What happened in New York City was inexcusable, the governor said. I believe the mayor underestimated the scope of the problem. I think he underestimated the duration of the problem, Cuomo said. The mayors spokesperson called Cuomos comments offensive to the men and women of the NYPD, who are out there every night trying to keep New Yorkers safe.

The mayors solution to fixing the problem is to enact a new curfew 8 p.m-5 a.m. through next Sunday and put police on 12 hour shifts and deploy more of them. But he refused Cuomos offer of some 13,000 National Guard troops, some of which are already deployed in the city at Penn Station and Grand Central. A frustrated Gov. Cuomo said he would not overrule the mayor because that would add to the chaos. But he said the NYPD needed to increase the number of cops on the street. Meanwhile, police union president Patrick Lynch was furious at Cuomos comments, and said its a disgrace that the city and state cant find a way to work together. The politics between the two houses has to stop because its putting our guys in danger. Give us direction. Allow us to do the job. Well do it, Lynch said.

Honestly..... New York has one of the highest ratios of cops per person in the country and by extension on the planet. There are systemic problems in terms of motivation and/or in terms of effectiveness if they can't police main street and shops like Macy's are getting looted.

Is it a blue flu? Do the cops treat it as a job not a calling and they just sham out when its actually time to work?

They have 55,000 employees in the NYPD.

Except this is bullshit if you look at facts. You can't just look at total number of infected and say they failed because the fact is with a city as densely populated as NYC and mass transit being almost mandatory, there was no preventing a significant loss of life. Yeah they should have locked down sooner, but outside of that they have made mostly the right decisions. Reality is with that city even handling it perfectly things would have been shitty.

New York is one of only a few states to see consistent declines in deaths, hospitalizations, and new infections. They also lead the way in testing, doing any where from 50,000 to 70,000 tests a day. They also have more tracers than any other state in the country.

Was Cuomo perfect? No, but they are further down the slope than any other state. Even California, the state that shut down first, is seeing a rise in everything while New York sees lows that weren't seen since before the pandemic. This is factually provable, not just some baseless accusation.

Pick a state and look at their graphs and see them rise while New York falls.
