I am 50ish long shots away from Damascus on CoD MW. To be honest the only challenges were the riot shield and the rocket launcher that doesnt lock on.

I remember back in the day we had games like Diablo2 were if you wanted an enigma you had to want that son of a bitch, you had to earn it, and even then you may never get it.

Nowadays games are a joke, you want God tier items? Play a week tops. You want a cool skin? Play a few days or use your CC.

Gaming is a joke now.

I think part of the problem is availability. Gaming is basically hyper oversaturated so devs are afraid to do anything that might put off players even temporarily because a lot of players have 50 more games in their backlog and not a whole lot of free time.

On the other hand, I don't really consider pointless grinding to be all that meaningful either, especially if it actually gates content. It's really only the first couple clears of something that have any meaning in terms of skill. The grinding SHOULD be to learn the stuff well enough that you can actually clear it but that goes back to any sort of difficulty causing too many players to jump ship.

The blockbuster games of today are trying to appeal to a much broader audience than the old ones did, which is why they tone down the extremes. There are still plenty of games that make you put serious effort in, you just have to recognize that you're looking for a niche and search beyond the major AAA releases. Since you mentioned diablo 2 I suggest giving path of exile or grim dawn a try.

The problem is theres some genres that are effectively AAA exclusive.

Imagine wanting to grind for hours every day for weeks and not get paid? Ain't nobody got time for that.

I do sort of sympathize though. One thing that I've always loved about games is how they can take the process of mastering something but then design the curve and reward structure of it to be much faster and better paced. Essentially, it can take 100s or 1000s of hours to get good at something like piano and theres a lot of times in there where you really aren't improving much whereas a game you can experience going from beginner to master in a condensed timeframe of only like 40-50 hours. Accomplishment is a big part of that and games have really laid off things that would grant a sense of accomplishment these days be it difficulty or time investment unless they are just cheaply trying to pad out play time.

Like seriously. If all Im doing is grinding I might as well go to my job and buy the damn thing through an micro transaction for 20 minutes of work instead of hours of work.

I'm fine with grinds that are actually challenging or entertaining, but when it's just a matter of hoping for the rough equivalent of a divine blowjob from the random number gods while doing the same thing over and over again thousands of times, that's really not that fun. Some RNG and grind are fine, but when it's taken to extremes like so many older games did it makes the game feel more like a job than a pastime.

Yeah, it's crazy how some games nowadays will just let you buy a $100 spaceship with real money instead of having you work for it in-game.
