Games that people see as the best ever made, but you don't 'love' them, but only 'like'. Not games you dislike, but games you only 'like' and not 'really like'.

For me the ultimate doom and half life are good example. i recognize their greatness but i don't enjoy them nearly as much as shooters like COD 1/2 and OG battlefront 2. I prefer shooting people instead of aliens.
GTA vice city is another example. Its better than III in every way, but i enjoy III more because 1) it doesnt have stupid flying missions and 2) i find liberty city to be more itresting than vice city, but this is all subjective and apart from that i think vice city is objectively better than III.

Hard to say. Most "critically acclaimed" games that I don't love, I outright dislike.

I guess Dark Souls could count, but I don't have a lot of time invested into it. Dodge Roll: The Game doesn't really do it for me.

Monster Hunter World is another game that I didn't outright "dislike", but otherwise did absolutely nothing for me.

There's a recurring theme here that I really don't like the combat in these games.

Most Zelda games, they are fun to experience but are more like 7.5 or 8/10 games rather than 9 or 9.5/10 games

BioShock, Mass Effect series, and KOTOR, in these cases I liked everything about the games aside from the core gameplay itself which bored me pretty quickly

-Super Mario Bros. 3 kind straddles this - it's a fantastic game, but World was better in almost every way

That's actually a better candidate for the question at hand than either of the two games I mentioned.

Skyrim. The janky combat really brings it down for me. It's like just the wrong level of actiony for me where it feels bad if I don't execute combat perfectly but it doesn't feel good when I do.

Mass effect as well. I thought they were decent but not great. I despise how there is a finite amount of xp in the universe. I don't think the games would have been hurt by the ability to grind even if it was somewhere introduced late in the game. The story was also above average but not more than that for me.

I guess zelda like some other people have been saying. Haven't played BotW though.

I feel like theres gotta be a lot more but I can't think of em off the top of my head.

Ocarina of Time. It's a great game, and it did a lot of things before anyone else. But anyone who thinks it's literally the best game of all time has some serious nostalgia goggles on.

I could probably say the same things about Mario 64, but I personally like that game a lot more than OoT.

I feel like I'm more likely to dislike games people love than I am to just like them. If the reasons they love the game are things I care about, I'd probably be just as excited about it. But if the reasons why people love it are things I don't care about or actively dislike, then I'm going to be apathetic at best and at worst I'm going to hate it.

The only game I can honestly think of that I sort of enjoy but not LOVE that people can't stop jerking off over is Skyrim. I don't even remotely think it's the best RPG ever (or the best RPG of its era, or even just the best RPG of specific subgenres), but it's an okay time-waster/grind simulator if you're in the mood for that sort of thing. But I think it's more addictive than enjoyable.

Nah. I don't dislike those things because other people like them. I'm just pointing out that other people's criteria isn't necessarily mine.

As an example, the greatest platformer game of the last 20 years is still going to be a shitty game to me, because I don't like platformers. You may think it's the greatest game ever made - I'm still going to dislike it.

And it's far easier and more likely to dislike something for not being what I want, as opposed to it being something I do want, but somehow not being good enough at what it does to impress me while somehow everyone else absolutely loves it.

Zeus posted...
If there's something that's like it but better, I'd love to know about it.

Nearly every other WRPG released in the last 20 years, for starters.

Being an open sandbox doesn't really make up for mediocre combat mechanics and incredibly weak writing. Especially since the open-world is itself the reason why the narrative tends to be so disjointed and weak - they essentially can't write strong story structure because they have no idea where the player is going to go and when. Over-reliance on mission markers means they handicap exploration to some degree (in spite of that being one of its main selling points), and most missions are pretty interchangeable overall (as most of them just consist of clearing nearly identical dungeons and occasionally fighting a boss, occasionally broken up by fetch quests). It's part of why ESO managed to be a pretty effective MMO - a lot of Skyrim's framework was tailor-made for MMO style of play (this is not a compliment).

I'm also personally annoyed by the "nearly any NPC can die" mechanics, since they tend to cause far more annoyance and frustration than they ever do inspire a feeling of immersion or personal empowerment (especially when combined with bugs or poor coding that wind up killing NPCs for no good reason entirely outside of your control, locking you out of things with no recourse to fix it unless you're playing on PC and can cheat with console commands). Worse, that feeling of expendability (combined with the aforementioned problems with open-world narrative) means that most NPCs are incredibly generic, because they have neither the time nor the inclination to really delve into any character's personality or story (and the constantly repeated voice sets don't help with that either). It's not quite as bad as the cardboard cutout NPCs in Fable, but it tends to become obvious for much the same reason, when you're thinking about getting married (probably just to get the Achivement/Trophy), only to realize that it's barely worth bothering and there's very little difference between the potential partners anyway.

Combined with just how damned buggy the game can be (and how often you may need to check a FAQ or wiki to find ways to bypass quest-breaking bugs and glitches), and a lot of the Skyrim experience basically boils down to a lot of busywork punctuated by occasional frustration (from bugs, poor design, shit coding, or outright game crashes). For some people none of this matters because they think the scenery is beautiful and just enjoy looking at it, but that isn't going to be a selling point for everyone (and some people will be too distracted by the fact that 99% of the people in Skyrim look terrible unless you're using mods).

Speaking of mods, they're the main reason why people praise the game so much - because there are so many mods out there to tweak things in different ways. But that doesn't really change the fact that the base game is kind of mediocre (and says more about the creativity of the audience than it does about the worth of the developer).

Dragon Age: Origins as well. I was pretty hyped for it and ended up fairly disappointed. It did help, with the way they did the dlc.

npc: Hey, fella, wanna do this sidequest?
me: Sure.
npc: Ok, gib monies.
me: >_>

Plus, my game crashed at the ending 4-5 times. Combine that with failed attempts to beat said boss, I had to do that fight probably a dozen times in a row and it ruined most of the good will the game had managed to build up.

World was disliked in a lot of ways by longer-standing fans of the series because it changed up quite a bit. Some of those changes were welcome QoL improvements that were long overdue (as a series, MH has some really weird design choices in it that often don't really align with modern game design standards), but many of them just served to dumb the game down and/or strip the soul out of it, and for a series whose challenging gameplay is one of its primary draws, that didn't sit well with a lot of people.

Metal Gear Solid 5.

After you're told to infiltrate the same place for the 5th time it gets pretty boring. I'm not a fan of the mission format in general, and the story was worse than MGS4 somehow. And the deployment cost basically meant there wasn't a huge reason to be unlocking and using the best equipment, because using it was super expensive in it itself, not just the already high unlock cost. It whole equipment system was seeming created to promote pay to win, as you can massively increase your resource intake by paying real money.

In general I'm not a huge fan of games without any story. "Here's a gun go kill things, etc." doesn't motivate me, but that's a personal preference.

If were talking about industry critics, the fact that Paper Mario: Sticker Star sits at an average of 75% shows their inability to be harsh toward certain games when it's obvious that the game is flawed on the mechanical and conceptional level even if you dislike story in games. Sure, there are some people who legitimately like Sticker Star, that's fine, but I have a hard time believing almost no critics thought the game was bad.

I'm probably a little biased because I played the ever living shit out of it. I was the first one on any of the boards to complete the guild card (so presumably first person NA to do it). 3U was the last one I played with good endgame IMO. I hate the RNG bullshit of 4U GQs or jewel farming in world and gen just really made you overgrind the deviants. 3U it was like "I want that sword, so I'll kill that enemy" and even then I still got well over 1k hours out of it. Lucent narga is also my favorite fight in the series. I'm also sad in world specifically how they killed what greatsword was and basically made it into a new weapon. I've always mained GS so I felt like I lost my weapon. Fortunately frostcraft makes draw sniping viable again so they kinda fixed that issue I had.

Yea probably a lot of them. Assassin's Creed has always been boring as shit, Persona 5 is worse than SMT 3 or 4, Zelda BOTW was cool at first, but chock full of disappointment

I think all the Souls games are the most overrated things. Pretty basic combat and RPG mechanics with "extreme difficulty." All you have to do to beat them is just learn movements and play the game slow, which is boring to do and watch.

Skyward Sword was called a masterpiece by reviewers, but I think it's in the bottom tier of all Zelda games. Still okay, but not great by any means.

Wolfenstein II received a lot of praise, but I thought it was a game that completely lacked a consistent tone, had mediocre gameplay, very little depth (I thought we would be able to explore an alternate version of history, it wasn't very open at all), and had a really shallow story.

Sin and Punishment was hyped up when it hit the Wii Virtual Console for its first North American release, but I really, really didn't like it.
