On all artistic endeavors. Not fucking worth it anymore. It doesn't fucking matter how good you are at something these days anyways. It's all about trends and bs popularity contests. Why actually put time and effort into something when someone's scribbly bs drawing gets 100x the likes and praise as your blood sweat and tears? It isn't fucking worth it.

That is the most cliche, bs retort tbh. At a certain point, most artists crave recognition for their hard work. Otherwise you wouldn't have any industries and everyone would sit at home and keep their art to themselves. Movies, video games, books, television, IG and other social media. All platforms and outlets for artists to show their work to others in the hopes they like it.

I've tried. I network and am always supporting other artists. Hell, I even followed people I didn't think were very good, like the one I linked to. I liked all their posts, tried to promote them and help them. But it never seems to come back around.

I'm not so much of an artist, but I have friends who are very talented and struggling, so I can at least sympathize.

Are you in connection with other artists as part of a community? I can guarantee they'll understand your feelings better than materialistic CE.

If you have those you can connect with, support them and they'll support you in return and as a community you'll reach more people than trying to do it all alone.

Scenario:

You go to an audition for a spot singing with a band. You practice for years and years and years, pouring all of your effort into sounding as good as possible. You have your audition and you sound great. Then William Hung shows up, sings Happ Birthday, and leaves. A few days go by and you never hear from anyone and then see Will on TV with a huge crowd cheering his name while you sit at home.

Does it upset you in the slightest?

I'm in contact with some up and coming comic artists, and I had an "audition" of sorts to be an inker for their book. I also have a few publishers interested in one of my books. Just really struggling to stay motivated when countless hours are seemingly wasted. Spent over 400 hours on a giant mural and I think the biggest response I got was 30 likes on a FB group

If your art exists and persists, then it was not wasted. It doesn't go away because you only got 30 likes on Facebook.

It's a low key example, but despite making some of my FAQs years ago, they're only now seeing widespread use given the resurgence of their games for one reason or another. 30 likes now doesn't mean thousands won't exists further down the line.

So William Hung should sing lead vocals for your favorite band? What if it was the 80s and he took over for Freddie Mercury (I'm not saying I'm as talented as him, don't get the wrong idea) singing for Queen? Would it be totally cool because he owns how much he sucks?

i am here to tell you that time spent does not always mean talent acquired. bad habits left uncorrected or unmentioned will stay. thinking you sound good - even being told you sound good by your friends and family - are not the same as actually sounding good.

i need to ask you if anyone has ever told you that your art sucks, because it doesn't sound like you can handle the criticism and it doesn't look like you've been subject to any.

if you want to improve - if you want people to notice you - the first thing you need to check is your ego.

No, no one has because it objectively doesn't suck. There are metrics for these things.

You don't get into a 200 year old, reputable private art school filled with former Marvel artists and Hollywood screenwriters purely on grants and scholarships if you suck, and you certainly don't get to audition for an off Broadway production. It isn't inflated ego, and it's not that hard to see why someone would get a little salty after a while of seeing others success who are less talented.
