Should I play Deltarune?

So, I made a playthrough topic almost 2 years ago (wow):

https://www.log~~~faqs.com/topic.php?id=76973319 (remove "~~~")

From post #9 onwards, you can read the full playthrough. As with my Shadow of the Colossus playthrough topic, I just couldn't get to the end of what I was originally aiming for, which is "playing the game to 100% completion and post a review [on Board 8] afterwards", and the topic just purged. It gave me breathing room, though, for what I wanted to do, which was not having to worry about the topic and playtime sessions anymore.

I eventually finished all of what I wanted to do and try, so I'll be posting those things in the following 7 days to fill in the blanks, make you catch up on what was missing, and get in the mood before things get started on the review.

Note: The review will be a Board 8 exclusive, not a sitewide review. I might get into sitewide reviews some years in the future, but before that I want to play more must-play games from every era to have a better working ground.

Deltaruna is great but Episode 1 ends on a massive cliffhanger. Might be best to wait.

I'm of the idea that part 1 is a decent enough game on it's own to play it outright, but it does lead to a nice cliffhanger.

Well, before I get to the actual thing, here's the recap and the summary of what happened during my Undertale playthrough during the past year-and-a-half.

UNDERTALE - The Playthrough Summary

Back in 2015, I tried the demo after BGE's incident. I did the ruins twice, killing and sparing enemies randomly the first time until I got to Toriel and couldn't spare her (or so I thought), so the second time I tried to spare her and succeeded.

In 2018, I tackled the whole game and, knowing that I could spare everyone (in theory), I decided to try Pacifist first. Since I didn't really know anything about how the game unfolded beyond the Ruins, I thought a Pacifist -> Neutral -> Genocide playthrough would be the way to go. At least I knew (for some reason) that I had to leave Genocide for later.

So I did pacifist, not touching the "Fight" menu even once, for the whole playthrough, save for the battle against Asgore and then against Omega Flowey. I named the fallen human "Lily" as well, as I thought it was a cute name for a pacific and friendly girl (since Frisk was a girl in my eyes).

After that, you people told me there was pretty much no reason to do Neutral now that I had done Pacifist, so I jumped straight to Genocide. I named the fallen human... Um *checks* Darn it, I don't remember; I remember wanting to name "them" after a poisonous plant due to its killing nature, so I eventually came up with the perfect gender-neutral name, but I don't remember it anymore (do you?). Anyway, this time around, not only did I not touch the "Spare" option even once, but I also had the audacity of removing the "yellow names" option for the entire playthrough, since I knew I didn't need them. And boy, I was tempted to use it at times, but crazygamer told me to "stay determined", and so I did.

So I destroyed the world and went back to Pacifist again, since I wanted to accomplish the "Soulless" ending now that I had done Genocide. I did watch the ending beforehand on YouTube, but accomplishing it on my own was still a big challenge on and of itself due to the implications - it was scary enough to make me try to experience it on my own rather than just watching it; not because I wanted to be scared (since I hate horror), but because I'm a completionist at heart and that way I felt like I really 100% the game on my own. This time, knowing about Frisk's gender neutrality, I decided to try a neutral name for a passive-aggresive child that hurt nobody but responded with rude replies So I named them "Rudy"! (This is where my topic purged.) Remember Rudy, guys? Well, Rudy went on its way, saying rude things, but never hurting anybody (I think I never used the "Fight" option, yet again), until they eventually took full possession of Frisk's body at the end Or so I comprehended at the time (more on that on the review).

After that, I thought: "Well, ironically, the only thing that's left for me to do is Neutral", so I did my first Neutral playthrough, naming myself "Normie" (you know, 'cause it's a "normal" person? Heh), killing and sparing monsters at random, and doing what I thought I would've done since the beginning: Kill Toriel, then proceed to experiment different outcomes with the rest of the cast. So I spared Papyrus, killed Undyne, had a lot of interesting phone conversations with Papyrus that I didn't think I'd miss beforehand, spared Muffet (iirc), defeated Mettaton, spared Asgore, and... spared Flowey. After that, he showed up and told me something like: "Is killing really a good thing to do? Try to come back here without killing anyone." I tried battling Asgore once again and see if anything changed if I killed him instead, but Flowey just showed up again saying a different dialogue. I repeated the process like 7 times until he said: "Why do you keep coming back here? Don't you have anything BETTER to do?"

So I ironically did my first "Not-True" Reset, and Flowey showed up at the beginning saying: "Remember, don't kill anyone, okay?" That was a surprise for me. Anyway, I did Neutral again, this time inverting the spare-kill ratio, and spared Toriel, killed Papyrus, spared Undyne (which never wanted to interact with me afterwards), killed Muffet (iirc), utterly destroyed Mettaton this time, watched Sans creepily reminding me about killing his brother, and finally... killed Asgore; but I didn't know that killing him after a Neutral ending had already occurred would result in the same thing as before: "Don't you have anything BETTER to do?" "Man, I wanted to see what happened if I killed Flowey! Ugh".

So before giving up, I realized I never entered Sans's secret room! So... what did I do? A final Pacifist playthrough, where I wanted to accomplish two things: 1._Spare every single monster so they showed up yellowed in the credits, and 2._Enter Sans's room. Both things were nice extra challenges that I overlooked before, so it didn't drag on as much as it could otherwise have. This time, I tried attacking monsters until I could spare them, which is something I actually didn't know I could do, but hey, it's more practical; I also found out I couldn't hurt anyone in the True Lab. So, I entered Sans's room, laughed my butt off in the process, then entered Sans's back door. After that, I did the rest of the run, saving Papyrus's date for the end before Asgore, then he immediately made me go to Undyne's house, then Undyne gave me her letter to Alphys right after the date ("Oh wow, neat, I didn't know we could already do this!", I thought), and finally had my date with Alphys before getting to the endgame. Y'know, I had forgotten about the whole Neutral-path thingy already activating certain switches on the story, so I didn't have to battle Flowey and everything became pleasantly much shorter. Normie ascended to being a peaceful human, and I did have the full yellow credits, but I was still corrupted, so "THE END" still showed in red. Darn...

(continuing from previous post...)

-----------

Well, I still didn't know what happened if I killed Flowey! So I basically speedran my way up to him in another Neutral run, killing NO ONE but So Sorry. This is where I found out two things: 1._That even if you kill an optional enemy that doesn't make your LOVE go up, you're still a murderer, and therefore 2._Undyne wouldn't want to hang out with "a murderer", so I could no longer do a pacifist ending there even if I wanted to, because Papyrus would just stand there without being able to do anything afterwards. I don't exactly remember Sans's judgement, though Anyway, I killed Asgore first to see what happened, but it was barely a dialogue change from the sparing option. I finally got to kill Flowey, and... after the credits showed up... I went back to my save file, defeated Asgore again, and Flowey said something shocking, like: "Did you really think that you would get rid of me by killing me?" It was basically a "you're so screwed and clueless now if you end up doing this in your first playthrough, since you're basically going to end up clueless as to what to do next". But it didn't end there...

I wanted to know what would happen if I returned here, doing Genocide, but after Flowey had already met me - "What would he have to say?". Well, the same thing, unfortunately: "Hahahaha. You're not really human, are you?" So yeah, I did Genocide once again. And again. And one more time. I could finally, FINALLY use the true name that I had reserved to this special occasion: "Chara". I realized so many things by doing Genocide again. I also felt it way different than my first experience with it. The reason I did this was because I wanted to see the dialogue for when you do Genocide twice. I wanted to see if in a third attempt I could see something different, but unfortunately that only works once. Even then, I have the most fun doing Genocide now, and it's the quickest route, so it was essentially a breeze to do it. I wanted to stop at the sixth Genocide run, since I heard the game uninstalls after it, but I had a computer change and my file was corrupted upon entering, making me appear at the void world where you have to speak with Chara, so I sort of lost interest in repeating this process until that happened, but maybe I could try it in the future, especially knowing how quick and fun it is to go through it (relatively speaking).

Why is it ironic?

Genocide was truly an overwhelming experience the first time, and even though I love action, I'm not into watching or making characters suffer.

More on that on the review. Probably tomorrow!
