Same with tv/movie/book streaming.

Having access to a never ending pool of high quality options makes me value things less in general.

I listen to a larger number of albums than I ever have, but I cant name them or remember them well months later. Might find one that stands out for a month, to forget its name in a few months. Almost any song I play often was found before I had access to streaming or from a band I already liked.

Paradox of choice

Dig deeper into it, find things to look for that are more special.

Nothing is actually special though. Even if it came first, there will be dozens of other proficient musicians implementing the same ideas into their music. Without the availability of those others then yeah, sure, but with then youre basically looking at dozens of minor variations.

Thinking a band is special is more about ego and wanting to be associated with a group or image than it is about the artist and not being a mindless robot.

Maybe you should stop using streaming services. Then you can value music more like the old days.

A little bit of Monica, still outside.
A little bit of Erica, on my Skype,
A little bit of Rita, quarantined,
A little bit of Tina, on my screen,
A little bit of Sandra needing sun,
A little bot of Mary on my lawn
A little bit of Jessica, six feet back
A little bit of you makes me stay masked

I hear what you are saying, I think it can have that affect. Personally, I have found a lot of music I connect with highly because of streaming, but I also tend to listen to full albums and will support those bands by purchasing the album on vinyl or a shirt or something.

I think if you are mostly into pop or music that is popular with the general populace, there is a real loss of value with streaming, it is all about the single now instead of the album.

Absolutely agree.

I'd also say the same goes for games- there are just so many out there and available to everyone that as soon as people get stuck on something they're very quick to move on to the next thing. Compare that to when I used to get a bad NES game I'd try to stick with it for a long while because I wasn't swimming in choices like we are now.

I agree, I remember how attached to songs I got back when I had to go hunt them down.

All of the music I liked was from Europe so Id have to wait weeks for a cd before I could listen to it. Then Id get it and listen to it for months. That doesnt happen anymore. Songs come and go in days now.

But at the same I get to hear all of this music I never would have found.

I've been big into Nightwish lately, who're a symphonic metal band from Finland. The internet's not all bad!

I always find it interesting when people allow themselves to become jaded to things, and then blame the availability of those things and not themselves for trying to keep things interesting.

Don't be a mindless robot just consuming. Dig deeper into it, find things to look for that are more special.
This.

In a way, it reminds me of those people who are like you shouldnt binge watch. Like, how about you watch at your own pace and let others watch at their own pace?
