The fact that R* somehow managed to triple the size and content over Vice City in the same console gen was nothing short of phenomenal (I'm not a techie but I seem to recall that they pioneered some form of dual-layered writing on the disc to cram it all in). I can't off the top of my head think of a same-gen leap from one series entry to the next that even comes close to it, and the fact that it crammed this all in without feeling bloated or unnecessary was a major feather in their cap (there's probably some who were argue certain side content felt like wasted space, but on the whole I don't see this as a controversial take).

That's a good point. Closest I can think is maybe... Super Mario Bros. 1 to Super Mario Bros. 3?

Good luck playing GTA 4 today, everything in it feels ancient.
Tbh, playing GTA4 feels like going into a time machine to 2008/2009. Everybody is talking about terrorism and the economy and shit. Imo it's one of the cool aspects of playing the game these days. It really captured the feeling of that era well.

As someone who never played much GTA, I really liked GTAIV.

Was the driving that bad? I thought it was just me not used to the triggers on the xbox pad for driving

Rockstar themselves admitted the cars handled like boats

The missions were all so samey.

It was either go chase someone down or find a vantage point somewhere.

It had some of the best driving mechanics in any non racing games. Cars had weight to them and police chases were more intense because of that.

My biggest complaint with GTA 4 was that money literally had no effect on the game.

Its like...why make money?

I really liked the physics engine. I would spend hours going at high speeds, crashing out of a car, and watching how far I can bounce.

Was I the only one that loved it at the time of release?

Firefights felt great. Vehicle destruction was the best in the series to this day imo.

GTAV has a similar problem. You can't afford to buy most of the properties until you literally beat the game, and then they make you do missions to get the money back $500 at a time after you spent hundreds of thousands on it. What's the point anymore?

Also like 600% of the games content is only online mode. SP money or purchases might as well not be in the game.

I'll never forget when I threw a Corquette halfway across the map using the swingset, and it somehow was still driveable despite the fact that it looked like it went through a car crusher, and both axles were bent.

I've been feeling nostalgic as hell playing through it again. I also recently started playing Guitar Hero and watching Scrubs again. All three of these things were my go to time killers in 2008/2009. Throw in Halo 3 when it comes out on PC in a couple months and my laptop will officially be a time capsule.

It's worth mentioning that it did this while only having a single loading screen. GTA3 and VC both had loading screens when you switched islands. SA was one continuous map.

Honestly, they probably could have done it with GTA 3 and VC too, because they are built on the same engine. R* just needed to make the push and explore the console's power level.
