Yeah, people who grew up with the NES will obviously have nostalgia and love for it. But for people who didn't grow up with the system, most of them respect the NES sure, but how many of them truly *love* the NES? Most of the games have aged poorly.

The SNES has aged a lot better, but even then, some games just age better than others. Super Metroid and Chrono Trigger have aged especially well (which might explain their resurgence in 2015), while imo ALttP's always struck me as a game that aged badly at least relative to its peers. I don't think I've met many people who didn't grow up with ALttP be too impressed by it and ALttP's usually stuck fighting for 6th place with Skyward Sword on "best Zelda polls" on most non-boomer gaming sites.

Hey LTTP is my favorite game that came out before I was born!

Many NES games have aged poorly, but SMB3 is not one of them. It's honestly as good as it ever was and likely ever will be, which is impressive.

You mean the opening post that forgot to mention Melee?

There is no Noble Nine for games.

I was really just answering about the nine strongest games and I don't think Melee belongs unless those rallies will help is out every contest from now on.

No, there isn't a Noble Nine and never will be. That's a character thing, which a lot of people misunderstand as being solely defined by the chain of not having lost to anyone but themselves. It's still fun discussing the strength of the games though.

I was born in January of '95. Even if I was born after Chrono Trigger's release though, it would still be LTTP, which is such a seminal game.

I know that feeling. I loved that April was a remake month with Trials of Mana, Resident Evil 3 and Final Fantasy VII all being released, then I realized that my some of my coworkers werent even born when those games were released... >_>

Nintendo has released five 2D Zeldas in the past fifteen years: Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks, Link Between Worlds, Triforce Heroes, and Link's Awakening. Admittedly that last one is a remake but it was still a big deal.

I think the idea is that while 2D platformers, sidescrollers and metroidvanias are still commonly being released (Hollow Knight, Ori, INSIDE, Celeste, etc) and have taken a life of their own, 2D top down Zeldalikes are not really a thing. Binding of Isaac is the closest successful one that I can think of and that's still pretty distinct from Zelda and you'd have to dig deep into obscure indie games like Oceanhorn to find 2D Zeldalikes. So while ALttP was a big seller back in the SNES days, this particular style of games seems to have lost favor today.

ALttP's main issue is that OoT completely overshadowed it in a way that Metroid Prime never did for Super Metroid or Super Mario 64/Galaxy/etc never did for the classic 2D Marios and I'm not really sure why. Despite Prime being considered a masterpiece like OoT, it never really diminished Super's supremacy within Metroid. Meanwhile, the modern Zelda fanbase treats ALttP like it treats the original LoZ: a title everyone respects but few particularly *loves*. Just go on r/zelda and see how far you have to scroll down to find any ALttP content.

It was probably Ocarina being more different from LTTP in contrast to Metroid Prime.

Or in other words, 2D Zelda and 3D Zelda feel like completely different animals in a way that doesn't really work the same for Mario and Metroid.

Ocarina of Time brought a focus on the story, presentation, world, and characters to a level that wasnt really there for the early 2-D Zeldas (Link to the Past and links awakening were obviously a step up though) and creates extensive material for discussion and fan-works after you run out of gameplay stuff to talk about. I love Link to the Past dungeons as much as the next guy but there's only so much you can talk about Turtle Rock or the Tower of Hera before moving on.

Mario platformers never had much of a story worth caring about. Metroid Prime mostly sticks to datalogs with a few important points in Prime 2 and 3 where NPCs talk to you for awhile. And of course Metroids main attempt to center the game around its story in a big-ish budget way made an utter hash of things.

That's probably it, yes. And also why MOM became as controversial as it did (IMO in hindsight, the story isn't as bad as people make it out to be, and the gameplay is equally mediocre).
