They made up these fake scandals because Joe was expected to be the nominee/was the nominee. They would have made up fake scandals for anyone. And as fake scandals go, I don't expect this one to be at all effective.

It's a completely nonsensical conspiracy theory that you have to be immersed in the Fox Extended Universe to understand, relies on convincing people that a much more popular president (Obama) was doing shady shit, does not connect to anyone's lives, and ultimately comes to "look at how mean they were to Trump and Mike Flynn"

I mean these scandals, (air quotes because yes, they are all bullshit), existed before Hillary/Biden was the nominee, they are made up in importance/criminality but not fabricated out of thin air.

In the same way that Trump blatantly fires his oversight, be ready for an FBI/Justice Department stooge to hold a press conference at the start of November announcing charges and/or evidence that wont materialize to try a Comey repeat.

This could easily lead to a complete and total breakdown of the US government, and obviously thats a worst case scenario, but can you really say its out of the realm of possibility?

LotM's point, and I agree, is that Barr and Trump's DOJ would announce some investigation against whoever the Democratic nominee was. They assumed it would be Biden so we saw them start that engine up (far earlier than they'd like, leading to literal impeachment) but they'd do the same with Sanders or Warren or Buttigieg if they had won.

Off the top of my head I assume the BS "investigations" they'd go with for those three would be: Jane Sanders/universities or non-profit, allege there was some fraud perpetuated around the whole Native American thing with Warren, announce a federal investigation into police shootings in South Bend with Buttigieg.

The difference with all of these as well as with Biden in comparison to Clinton is that Clinton had 25 years of the GOP hate machine laying the groundwork on Clinton so their base was already primed to hate her and the narratives had been floating around for so long that even people outside the bubble would start going "well i've been hearing stuff about her for over two decades that couldn't happen unless there was something there, right!?"

Why were they spying on Russia? The incoming US President made greater friendship and cooperation with Russia a cornerstone of his campaign platform. Isn't it obstructing the will of the American People to persist with antagonizing Russia during the lame-duck period?

Now, you can argue that Obama was elected for a full four-year term in 2012 and he was entitled to persist with his policies until the very end of his term. That's true and that's not illegal. But if the FBI was attempting to get a witness to commit perjury - that is definitely a crime.

And as far as "getting him to commit perjury" goes, they were asking him questions they knew the answers to and charged him for lying when he lied of his own volition, which is the same thing they do for all of their other cases, whether for drugs, terrorism, or whatever. If you have a problem with that, then fine! Argue that Congress should make it illegal. But it's very much standard operating procedure, and there's no reason that it should be a special outrage when it's done to Flynn.

I don't care if it's standard operating procedure, sending people to the gulag for coughing while Stalin was speaking was standard operating procedure in the Soviet Union too. It's wrong. And here in the US, we have a legal doctrine for dealing with this already - fruit of the poisonous tree. All evidence collected from such activity is unusable and any case based thereon must be tossed. Then the perpetrators can be charged with subornation of perjury. Glad we finally have an AG who's being objective instead of just supporting our law enforcement agencies.

One thing I've been lowkey dreading is that since Trump fired a bunch of officials from previous administration and replaced them with sycophants, whatever Democrat replaces him would have to commit to a large-scale investigation of corruption and negligence within the government agencies, and take steps in good faith to fix broken ones and replace corrupt appointees. But obviously, they'll have to do this while weathering criticism from the right that the Democrats are now doing the exact same thing Trump did.
