One of the most important public institutions of our country and this guy wants to see it suffer for not fucking reason. This shit is important for people's survival.

Also my package, which was shipped on May 5th still hasn't even been processed by USPS. This wouldn't be an issue if we actually took the virus and our infrastructure seriously.

Well considering they lose $1Billion a year and must be subsidized by the tax payers I'd say its piss poor management from the post master and not the president.
You are blaming 1 guy that's been in office 3 years for something that has been mismanaged for 40 years. Hell most the vehicles they deliver mail in are 30+ years old.

Privatized is better than government run. We the tax payers fund something that bleeds money like a stuck pig. Or private companies that compete with each other bringing us the consumer, lower prices. I ordered off amazon on Friday at 5am and got my package on Sunday. That's a must better place than USPS could ever do.

My wife uses USPS for her business and depending on where the packages go they arrive really slow or damaged amd it is very difficult to get a refund. Private business doesnt want negative feed back so they will refund no problem. Easy fix than having a fully pissed of customer.

You do know that the USPS isn't funded by taxpayers right? The last time they received funding from the government was 1981.

USPS is self-funded.
And the only reason it's facing massive budget issues is due to a stupid 2006 law that Congress and GWB passed that suddenly required them to pre-fund employee retirement 75 years into the future. The same bill also restricted the USPS's ability to raise prices on its services to help pay for this.

It's basically been set on a course to fail for 15 years by Republicans, who wish to see it be destroyed.
Basically, everything in your post is wrong and stupid.
And Trump knows damn well why they're in their current situation and what little they're allowed to do about it, as he berates them for not raising prices when they can't even do that w/o Congress allowing it.

It's actually quite impressive to get that much factually incorrect information into a couple posts. Like you're just wrong about everything aside from the stuff that is arguably more opinion based.

So the only reason the USPS has financial difficulties is because the private companies lobbied and bribed the legislators to require them to find their retirement plans so far in advance they are funding employees they haven't even hired yet. No other organization whether private or public has to do that. So while you can argue mismangement it isn't the post master general. Can't blame it on Trump, because it's the legislators who put it into action, but Trump absolutely deserves shit for how he is acting towards a constitutional branch of the government.

Privatized isn't inherently better. I don't know why people try this mindless argument "Oh public is so ineffecient!" so is private, it has built in inefficiency. The goal of a private company is not to be the best at whatever service or product they provide, their goal is to make money so they deliver the minimum they feel they can get away with.

The USPS delivers to every address in the US, and that means delivering mail by donkey down canyon paths to some native american reservations from what they said at the USPS orientation I went to several years ago. The USPS handles end point delivery for large swathes of the US. If you don't know what that means, it means all the private companies send their rural mail to the USPS for delivery while they only handle the routes that are "worth it". No private company is going to ensure that every address in the US can reliably receive their mail.

Also what is that nonsense about 30 year old vehicles??? And the amazon on sunday thing? I know the USPS started doing sunday deliveries lately apparently, is that what you're talking about?

Nevermind the part where FedEx and UPS may use USPS for the "last leg" of the trip anyway and would charge even more if that option went away, on top of all the remote areas that aren't profitable that they'd simply refuse to serve.

I'm amazed. This topic might be the first time in 30+ years I've ever seen a single person actually defend the USPS.

Usually everyone shits on them completely, talk about how it should be shut down to stop draining taxpayer resources (or just privatized to function more like FedEx or the like), and generally how it's mostly worthless in a digital age and how better alternatives already exist for nearly every use.

Even people who tend to argue that it's necessary for public welfare tend to admit that it's catastrophically mismanaged and desperately needs massive overhaul and reform to fix its countless problems.

GastroFan posted...
I was born BEFORE 1995 and think that he's done his best to TEAR this country down by turning people against one another, over one subject or another.

That was happening long before he was elected, and would still be happening even if he never ran for office in the first place. He's just the latest in a long string of milestones in the slow and probably inevitable decline of political discourse in the US.

Some people have suggested the rise of the Internet is to blame. Basically, people who spend all their time being assholes to each other on the Internet are slowly losing anything resembling tact and human empathy, so we've basically reached the point where we can't stop being assholes, even in contexts we used to see as being more deserving of respect and politeness. Years ago people would support a President even if they disagreed with their politics, now no one hesitates to call the President an asshole or an incompetent or borderline criminal. And I don't just mean Trump - people have been getting more and more savage with every President every term for the last 20 years or so.

Though personally, I tend to suspect that the mindset of the nation shifted during the Vietnam War, when people stopped having faith in the nation as a whole and have slowly become more and more cynical ever since. When polls show that more Americans believe that Elvis faked his death and is still alive than who believe our government as as whole (regardless of who is President) has our best interests at heart, something has gone seriously wrong somewhere. And that growing distrust and dissatisfaction in general just sort of eats away at the pretense of propriety, until everyone basically shits on the idea of respecting the office even if you don't respect the person who holds it.

The rise of the 24-hour news cycle and the polarizing effect of biased political pundits probably play a role as well, as US politics have effectively become the Console War of the modern generation, as everybody picks a side and then just attacks anyone who dares to have a different opinion. When you choose your side, only really get news from sources that already agree with your pre-established bias, and then dismiss and insult anyone on "the other side", you're never really forced to confront your own flawed assumptions, and will never change anyone else's mind. And everyone involved - on both sides - pretty much winds up looking like an asshole and a parrot who can't think for themselves.

And if you're reaction to any of this was "Yeah, but the other side totally do that and are way worse", you're absolutely part of the problem.

Keep in mind that the post office has had two things recently that have hurt it greatly.

In 2006 the Repub-led congress passed a law forcing the Post Office to pre-pay 75 years of it's in advance which no other corporation on earth has to do. The government also won't let the Post Office raise rates to stay profitable, so if they determine that the only way to make a profit is to double the price of stamps the government won't allow that.

Anyway you look at it countless businesses benefit from the post office from large corporations sending junk mail to us, to smaller businesses using it to ship stuff they make on Etsy or sell on Ebay. Not to mention huge Corps like Amazon that use the USPS to help keep costs down. Sure the days of people using mail to communicate is basically over, but that doesn't invalidate the need of the Post Office.

You're about a decade and a half late and don't *quite* have the right target of your ire, TC. The Republican's 2006 PAEA out of nowhere required the Post Office to prefund up to 70 years of retirement payments, and it nearly tanked them overnight.

Why would the Republicans do this? Some say it was a naked attempt to kill the USPS so a private firm could take over, likely because they actually started believing in their own "small government" mantra to a comedic degree. Others say it's because they are just plain evil and like to see the common man suffer. It's likely a combination of both.

Either way, much like Trump is not a pariah of the GOP, but rather Frankenstein's monster, Trump going after the USPS is just him trying to finish what the GOP as a whole started. Well, maybe- Trump seems to pick new targets at random everyday for his ire, and rarely follows through with said threats.
