I would just like to say that every single one of mine came from the previous decade. I truly believe that the quality of storytelling in games has improved immensely in the past ten years, and I greatly look forward to RPGs from the 90's running roughshod over the list lol.

I almost put like 4 games from 2019 on my list, so I definitely agree with the assertion that there a lot of smart people writing games now and thanks to the democratization of tools they can release across a variety of platforms in untold numbers of genres.

I do actually think the scenario for both 7 and Remake are really good, and the original has some really great character work, particularly with Barret and how he's channelling his anger and depression into direct action to benefit his friends and family, and this intersects with Cloud's arc in cool ways

but I never for a moment considered a single final fantasy game

Honestly contrasting FFVIIR to FFVII was what even more solidified my thoughts on this. The way original FFVII's story is paced is insane. It is extraordinarily dense and effectively skips a lot of development and bridges between events you would expect in a narrative. It's not paced like any other medium or even current video games, it's paced like a 90's RPG and that's not really a good thing.

I have only gotten to Heavensward, but it really feels like a continuing story broken into discrete parts to me, so it's tough!

If someone voted for FF14 as a whole I wouldn't stop them. If someone wanted to vote for just one Expansion, I wouldn't stop them. If it turns out the options are LFFing each other to the degree where they would make the list if combined...I'll figure something out. I understand that when it comes to episodic content, things gets fuzzy.

Some more examples are Umineko and Walking Dead. Umineko can be clearly split up into the Question Arc and Answer Arc, but if someone wanted to just vote for the story as a whole I would take that into considering. Walking Dead is easily split into seasons, but same deal. HOWEVER each individual episode of each arc is way less 'complete' than a full season/arc/expansion so I'm not allowing stuff like The Walking Dead Season 1 Episode 2. The line has to be drawn somewhere.

Meanwhile, Japanese people have been making VNs with 1 or 2 person teams since the 90s (and maybe earlier).

Some of my favorite stories are VNs but I'm a bit confused at making the point of 'fast pacing can be great' while extolling VNs in the same post.

Some VNs are fast-paced! And some of them could be better if they were faster paced too :p.

Just saying it's that way sometimes though, not all the time.

there have been adventure games in the west going back to the 80s as well. that wasn't really my point though.

Whether or not a story would benefit from faster pacing depends entirely on the story, I think. Most of my favorite stories are pretty lengthy though so I probably trend towards appreciating slower-paced stories more.

Don't worry about it. If it ends up mattering, I won't penalize the entrants for specific LFF conditions like that.

Here's some more random factoids:

The game with the highest average points-per-vote rating is not in fact an obscure game with dedicated fans like you might expect, but an extremely mainstream GameFAQs game.

I'll probably be limiting the list to games that have three or more supporters. The list is so top-heavy that a few games with only two supporters might sneak in depending on how large I make the final list, but just two dedicated fans isn't indicative enough of being liked by the board as a whole.

The game with 3+ supporters but the worst points-per-average score makes me sad that it's scoring so badly.

Some games that I expected to get support simply...aren't. The board actually has pretty varied tastes, which is cool.

Let's pick at random one of the games that only has 1 point (4 points when weighted) and reveal it, because I'm bored. It is...Red Dead Redemption 1.
