I'm definitely enjoying it more this time than I did ~15 years ago. I remember being sort of turned off by the repeat partner in Goombella, as well as not enjoying the setting of Rogueport as much as PM64 and I think those are still true now but bother me less.

Also, maybe it was my CRT but I didn't appreciate how pretty this game is

I've been trying to play this on my Wii u but the rom comes through shitty with black bars on the top and bottom. I have two physical copies of the game and I wish I still had a Wii or GameCube smh

Dang, I actually have two as well for some reason. A greatest hits and an original. Is GameCube expensive these days? I actually got into collecting for it because it was one of the consoles I still have

I'm digging it this time around. I'm not really big on the audience gimmick so far tbf, but that's a minor complaint

I really need to give the original paper Mario another chance, I only got roughly halfway through it but I just remember viewing it through such a cynical lens because I was upset about it being a paper game in general lol

I remember my first playthrough of that game. I got all the way up to the final boss, and... the game crashed.

Was so mad I didn't play it again until years later, and 100%'d it. GOAT.

I remember the game being super challenging for me, especially that last dungeon and boss.

I also remember a looooot of backtracking. Like, almost every dungeon or level made you go back and forth through the world.

The backtracking is the most obvious one, but the game has some seriously uninspired level design. I mean, how many times do you go through a flat or nearly-flat area with enemies spread liberally throughout?

there's a shocking lack of content. compared to the first game TTYD is downright tiny in comparison. this is also why the game relies so largely on backtracking because without it chapters would be over in no time flat.

think about how long it would take to beat chapter 4 without all that back and forth from Creepy Steeple, or chapter 7 without the General White chase. it makes me wonder what happened during development, because compared to the pacing of the original it's a slog.

Nope. Writing and characters is more than enough to overlook that.

in exchange, TTYD has a much better combat system and (imo) a lot more interesting characters

The combat system is like exactly the same so far except the gimmicky audience interactions

I think the biggest upgrade is graphics/presentation atm

superguards, putting parters in front (and just partners having more agency in general), iirc star powers didn't have action commands before(??), general improvement of badge and stat system in general

the core idea is the same but pretty much every aspect of it was improved massively. if you play through ttyd and then go back to 64 you feel extremely limited

That's the Toy Box, right? Most of it can be mitigated anyway.

I played the original and I found the Toy Box to be very backtrack heavy. It seems like a tradition in the Paper Mario games, at least the first 3, where Chapter 4 is easily the worst part of the game and usually involves a ton of backtracking.

idk what that line was in the original Japanese, but I believe that in the NA release, this was a push to try and make Fire Emblem succeed in the West. Fire Emblem: the Blazing Blade (released outside of Japan as "Fire Emblem") was the first Fire Emblem released outside of Japan. Similarly, Roy was included in Melee to try to spark international interest in the game.

There isn't a Virtual console on Switch. Except for the NES/SNES stuff

Agreed which is why I don't like TTYD. That and a lot of the text needlessly grogs on and on.

it did have some, but it's actually a case where repeat playthroughs can help lessen it since you don't need to go back to town to get the note translated

this kind of stuff is absent from TTYD. it's why PM64 is so so much more replayable than TTYD

Chapter 6 (flower fields) in the original Paper Mario has the worst backtracking by far. Always the chapter I look forward to the least when re-playing it. I didn't mind the backtracking in the other chapters of that game.
