The collection with black flag and rogue is on sale. I hear they're pretty good, but wtf kind of games are they?

What I mean is, all the reviews of the games assume I've played an AC game before so they aren't super helpful

1, 2, Brotherhood and Black Flag are the only ones worth playing. well, and Revelations, but just barely.

Revelations is pretty dull gameplay-wise. I think it's probably better to watch a YouTube video if you want to get the story beats for it.

Thanks bro. So if I don't like, for example, metal gear solid, maybe I should pass?

You trail a bunch of people and sometimes you get to assassinate people by talking to them for a long time in another dimension .

3 is worth playing through at least once. It's the only AC that resonates deep with me. I 100% AC2 and never beat 4 but still

I like 1 still best, I know I might be a minority here.

What 1 does best is actaully give you the feeling that you are an assassin. You stalk your prey, study them, figure out what the best way in is, how to kill them and then get out. I loved the planning aspect.

2 does a great job of diversing the gameplay while still being true to the core of 1.

The 2 spinsoffs of 2 Brotherhood/Revalations are good, just more of the same as 2 is.

3 feels like more of the same. Still a good game though

Black Flag is amazing in how it expands the world with the naval aspect of it, but here the focus on being an actaull assassin becomes less. It's a fanastic game, don't get me wrong, I can whole heartidly recommend it. It's just less of an AC game and more open world/exploration while also killing important targets.

I didn't care for Unity/Syndicate. They are fine games, just more of the same really.

Origins is amazing so far (haven't finished it yet). It has a huge world to explore, lots of sidequest and actual stories next to the main quest. Still doesn't feel like an AC game like the first 2 did, but since this plays (chronologically) before AC1 I don't really see that as a huge negative.

My recomendations: AC 1 and 2, Black Flag and Origins.

Are there interesting characters to encounter or is it more just a straight fighting randos kind of thing?

Black Flag and Rogue are awesome, but they are not necessarily "standard" Assassin's Creed games. And the series has undergone a lot of change throughout the years, too.

The original AC game is actually very slow and very repetitive. It focuses on collecting information about a target by pickpocketing messengers, eavesdropping on conversations, etc. Once you have enough information, you can put a plan together to assassinate the target. There's a very minimal open world experience here - you travel from your main base in the hills to the "overworld" which is like a series of valleys/very small towns to your destination city. There are three cities, each has three districts (poor, middle class, rich) and you unlock each new district when you complete each set of assassinations.

Every game after that dropped the information-and-planning mechanic in favor of a traditional action/adventure game that's narrative driven.

2, Brotherhood and Revelations all follow this character Ezio from the time he first becomes an Assassin to the time he kind of fully understands his destiny and role in the Creed. They made the combat a bit more engaging, added upgradeable weapons and gear to the game, added your own estate that you can invest in and grow, and added business mechanics where you can invest in businesses to generate money.

3 follows a similar format to 2. In this game they added ship combat, but it's limited to instanced missions (no open world ship travel). The economy system is also a little fleshed out compared to the "2 trilogy" but it's not *too* engaging/worthwhile imo.

Black Flag and Rogue are radically different. They have a big emphasis on ship combat, especially on the open world. They're basically pirate simulators. I personally loved Rogue a lot more - they brought back the business investing mechanic from 2 and 3, so there's a little more to do than in Black Flag, plus I just enjoyed the biodiversity more.

Unity starts delving in to RPG territory a little bit, with different sets of clothing and weapons that are designed for different playstyles, and it also introduced full online co-op missions (the only one in the series to have it).

Syndicate layers up the RPG mechanic a little with passive skills you can unlock between two characters. It focuses more on a gang mechanic, where you're trying to liberate districts in Industrial Revolution-era London.

And then Origins and Odyssey are straight up open world RPGs; they completely moved away from the "counter-counter-counter-kill" combat of the previous games and instead adopted a combat style more akin to what's in The Witcher 2/3, where you lock on, block, parry, roll, etc. It also has RPG-style questing.

There are characters and quest lines in black flag and rogue, which I would say is closest to gta style, with them showing up on the map... you heading over, getting a cutscene and then the mission starts.

No real characters just out roaming the world, those are nameless goons/ships, unless you count the legendary ships.
