Like one character out of nowhere just zooms ahead and becomes impossible to catch, usually finishing a half a lap ahead of you or any other CPUs? I played a shit ton of this game back in the day and I had it happen frequently enough to notice it was a thing. More often that not it seemed to be a character that wasn't one of the characters that was supposed to be doing well that cup. More specifically, I noticed it was frequently Luigi, who was far and away the worst CPU on my copy for whatever reason (I used to be amazed when he finished anything but 8th on a race he was so bad).

Yeah I've seen this happen before. There've been a couple of times where I've seen an AI get a time well ahead of the human record.

Yeah, it happened to me plenty of times. Seemed disproportionately to be DK or Bowser doing it, and they usually were one of my "rivals" for the given cup.

Royal Raceway was the most common course it happened on, too. Kalimari Desert the second most common.

I expect it is the game getting confused and thinking the racer is actually in last place. It seems to happen most often when a large wreck knocks out the rest of the field (kalamari train, thwomp room, etc) and one of the racers separates from the pack.

I think it might be not just the game thinking they're in 8th but thinking they're like, a full lap behind somehow, possibly? I'm not sure how the rubber banding rules work, but I think they're different depending on HOW far behind the AI is.

Yep, that's the norm. At least it's a way to make the game challenging!

Once in a while, but I've never seen it beat times that are actually possible. Seems to happen most often on Bowser Castle, probably because BC is the level most likely to lead to you falling behind the lead AI.

Yeah, Bowser's Castle is the track I specifically remembering it happening to me on, and it was Wario who went completely apeshit.

I've played a ton of MK64 in my life and I can't remember something like this happening to me.

Ah yes, it definitely happened most often on Bowser's Castle and Kalamari Desert, but every now and then it would happen on something like Mario Raceway.

There was a GameFAQs thread years ago about this, where multiple users reported this glitch happening and someone posted a video about it.

Yeah particularly happens because me and a friend used to play 2 player GP. We interfered with each other enough to discover a CPU is long ahead of everyone else.

Man, the game is so fun, but the AI is shit. Aside from the relentless rubberbanding, and things like this, sometimes they just become absolutely braindead. I remember once seeing Peach repeatedly driving into a Thwomp as I drove by her, then the next lap she was still there doing it. That's not to mention the other glitch I frequently notice, where someone basically disappears from the course entirely and is "stuck" for the rest of the race. Sometimes they'd start moving again as soon as someone finished the race, as if that character's AI was now free to pick up for the kne that quit.

But they're pretty easy to manipulate, especially on courses with wacky stuff like Wario Stadium. I managed to (purposely) get 8th place in a cup once.
