Ive only ever had one job and while I am proud of myself for holding onto it as long as I have, I kinda feel like I shouldnt be, since its just a shitty retail job.

Im definitely ready to move on but the problem is.. I dont even know what Id like to do. All I know is no more labor jobs / retail. Thats not much to go on

Unfortunately, I grew up and lived in an area where there really werent that many jobs (at least, ones worth leaving my current job for) so I wasnt able to really get a feel for anything else.

Most of the time, the jobs that people "job hop" to and from are usually pretty similar. A lot of times, those jobs seem to be most retail, fast food, or something similar. Most people don't usually job hop around places where you would start a career. Some do, but I think that sometimes kind of puts you at a disadvantage compared to the rest...

A lot of enjoying work is just about having autonomy and being good at what you do. Even better if it's in-line with your life mission. Occupational happiness is more about how you approach work than what the work is.

It's not too bad. Some people start careers later. Just try to find a good one fast. You wouldn't want to job hop for decade trying to find a good fit.

Retail = living death*

*(unless you are the owner of the business)

The only thing retail work is good for is being a teenager and learning how to work and manage a job, learn about taxes, and benefits....then learning how stupid this meager work is, that you know you need to get a "REAL" job to make the real money.

Go to college, or get into construction, get into trades get a wielding ticket, get a scuba-divers ticket too. Apply for off-shore oil drilling jobs wielding pipes under the ocean, make 6 figures, and drown yourself in margaritas and senoritas 3-4 times a year.

See, this is one of my hangups. Like I said in my opening post, Im legit worn out from retail. People think that its standing standing around BS-ing with your coworkers and stuff but its not; its a lot of heavy lifting, kneeling, straining... not to mention the mental exhaustion. So I know I absolutely dont want to do any kind of labor work.

But... I dont think Id like just sitting at a desk all day either. The only upside to that would be that Id be more comfortable doing harder workouts knowing that I dont have to be physical for my job. So its like... what else is there? Im graduating college at the end of the year and planning on starting my job search then (or more likely at the beginning of next year so I can use my paid time off one last time to do something fun).

Honestly the labor part keeps me from needing a gym. Exercise is good as long as you don't have bad joints or something. I'm no model but I look younger than my age and I can probably thank my job to some degree.

Retail or not, find a job you like. Nothing is more important. What good is 5 figures if you want to jump from the roof at the end of the day, ya know?

When choosing a career path when I was 18 I looked down on manual labor...sadly like most salaried office workers do (even if they dont realize it).

After getting a mostly desk job, I fantasize about being outside and working in construction. The skills that transfer to personal life, work with real meaning, physically seeing the progress of your labor, fresh air, exercise, a different meaning of professionalism, can eventually use your skills to run a company, coworkers who dont value 80h weeks, ability to take time off between jobs, Im a physicist and the trades likely use more math than I use day-to-day.

Not that my job sucks or anything.

I think the problem is most people don't understand what the real life day to day is so its hard to think what kind of work you can put up with and narrow down your interests.

I don't. Many of those jobs were 6 month contracts. My first job I held for 3 years. My 4th job I had for 4. My current job, I've had for 3 years.

I'm not surprised you think it's ok to insult people when you lack any facts.

What you mean is many wouldn't hire you after 6 months and after 3-4 years people have to sack you for poor kitchen hygiene.
