My update: diet is still off, eating barely below maintenence so I'm not necessarily gonna see the pounds dropping quick. It's about a 200-300 cal deficit right now so theoretically I'll lose 2 lbs a month. Meanwhile I'm happy with my lifting, my body is already looking better and I feel stronger. I'm in week 4.

I got 2 roadblocks ahead. Next 3 weekends in a row I work nights and at least 1 24 hr shift in each of those weekends. It's an extremely rough schedule that goes for 18 straight days flipping back and fourth between days and nights. On top of that, in laws are visiting the first week of June with kids, so again my whole routine will be thrown off. I just need to survive the next 4 weeks then I can get back to routine. So what this will involve is perhaps combining upper and lower power days if I know ill only have 1 day or combining back and chest, or cutting the number of accessory lifts short and just doing the main lift. Either way the goal is to hit each body part at least twice a week with heavy compounds.

I will inevitably be losing out on gains but keeping the consistency will be the most important thing.

I think I'm down to 160 if my scale is correct. I'm 5'10".
I'm not liking how my stomach looks though. I think I need to like focus 100% on abs for a few weeks or something.

What's the best way? I only have an ab wheel

I've been holding steady at 161-162 for a couple weeks now. I've still been drinking more than I would like, but it's still way less than I was before at least.

Last week of my second cycle of 5/3/1 for beginners today and I feel like garb

but I found it hard to hit the obliques

maybe do some bicycle kicks and leg raises. Abs are tough and mine suck

Abs are like other muscle groups where there isn't any one exercise that hits them all. If you want to build up an ab routine, it has to be a combination of lower lift and upper lift exercises with some rotational exercises in there to hit your sides.

I know I keep hyping this channel, but I swear I'm not affiliated with in any way. Romes, I would watch this first video or at least the first half because he goes into the different types of ab exercises to show how you want a good spread, but the actual routine uses equipment that you probably don't have at home:
https://youtu.be/qk97w6ZmV90

If you want something that's just a straight at home bodyweight ab exercise, consider this:

I was craving a soda earlier at a convenience store and decided I would be healthy and grab one of those half iced tea half lemonade combos instead. An hour later I was feeling sick so I checked the bottle out of curiosity and it had 49 grams of sugar! It legitimately would have been healthier to just get a soda can.

Lesson learned: always check the label.

i drank some kind of fizzy drink over the weekend and it had like 40g of sugar...not sure how people do that all the time

i keep it limited to water or diet coke if i wanna treat myself haha

sometimes will add in the flavored sugar free jolly rancher watermelon flavor to my water bottle if i have a serious sweet tooth...works okay

I figured it would have some sugar because of the lemonade, but in my head I just assumed that half iced tea with no sugar plus half lemonade was still only going to be like 10 or 12 G.

The big difference is sweetness versus dryness. Some dessert red wines are almost like grape juice and they have a strong sweet flavor, whereas others are extremely dry.

Saw a post on the fitness subreddit. Guy went from barely running a mile in ~11 minutes to running a 5k in 16-17 minute in a year with no previous running training.

Like wtf, that's insane progress.

I don't think that's crazy, you can up your mileage by 3miles/week pretty easily, so in 7 months you could go from "a dude who runs a couple times a week" to professional level training

there are famous competitive ultrarunners who are in their mid 30s who never ran before age 30

most people just aren't willing to put in the time

If you say so... I don't know anything about running but none of the sports I do follow really have a plausible example of someone going from almost literally untrained to professional level in half a year.

running is pretty special in that way, we are designed to be a distance running animal

you wouldn't be professional level, you'd just be training as much as the professionals. You'd still need to train at 90mpw+ for a few years to be competitive

Im starting to enjoy leg day. I think my squat form is finally down. I had gotten it down several years ago (I read Wendlers 5-3-1 book on squat tips, I watched several youtube videos on how to squat including Rippetoes videos), but after many years of not doing it at all I was rusty. So every time I'd restart something would be off and I kept thinking to myself, man is arthritis kicking it? Should I just stop squatting forever cuz I dont wanna mess up my joints? What sticks out to me the most is actually Wendlers tips - I run those steps through my head every time I squat.

My only worry is doing enough accessory work. I do deadlift, lunges, hip thrusts, jefferson squats, and romanian deadlifts. I might abandon jefferson squats though for barbell hack squat.

I used to work with old people. No one ruins their body running or squatting. They were the ones that looked 30 years younger than they were

the people who ruined their bodies were the ones that never exercised for 20+ years

Diet is still off, I'm basically recomping at this point with how its going. (Body looking a bit better, lifts increasing, weight staying the same). But I rather just cut and be done with it so I can bulk. I'm either overestimating my calories in or underestimating my calories out. I calculated out my average calories in and what should be my expenditure, as well as theoretical muscle gain per week. If all works out, my true daily expenditure is around 2250, including my lifting. I really should be eating like 1500 calories a day if I want to lose 1 lb a week on top of whatever muscle I would be gaining for noob gains. I'll try to trim some extra crap out of my diet.

Checking in. Had my back slightly rounded doing stiff legged deadlifts, pulled something and deadlifts and cobra hurt like a bitch. Started doing weighed pull ups because they didnt hurt and never looked back.

Dealifts are the most common injury exercise and bench you can guillotine yourself if youre an idiot. Most other exercises require you to really fuck up and do it very wrong to get a crippling injury... like locking out your knees on leg press.

I've repeatedly hurt myself doing deadlifts over the years. Nothing major but it sucks. If I screw up my form once I'm injured for weeks.

Currently, I'm doing some lower back exercises to try and strengthen that area and doing some super controlled deadlifts with like 150lbs to focus on form. I'm pretty sure my lower back is weak. I've hurt it a bunch of times picking up the bar for OHP too. I do OHP kneeling atm because I'm terrified of hurting it again while I'm out of work. If I ditch my routine now, I'll just lay on my couch all day and get fat.

Ima keep doing my PHUL workout for another few months and see where I'm at. Eventually I'm gonna switch to Greg Nuckols strongerbyscience 28 free programs routine and likely started with 2 or 3 days per week bench/squat and try to build up strength. I've looked at alot of programs out there and this looks the most attractive to me.

But anyways, I spent ALOT of time trying to perfect my squat and deadlift technique while advancing slowly on the weight. I think everyone should do the same. No one should be doing either exercise willy nilly. Even if I get the slightest twinge in any of my joints, I go down on weight and reassess my technique from the basics.

Right now I'm in the process of trying to perfect my bench technique which I think I've neglected for too long. Watched a video by Jeff Nippard about optimal bar path, he mentioned some things that I realize I'm doing wrong, like which direction the bar should go when you first start pressing up from the bottom.
