An all-time great; few films have reached its heights on a technical and stylistic level, though it's unfortunate that a lot of people seem to watch it due to the accolades without realizing it's almost entirely due to the cinematography.

Yes it's maybe the best movie of the 40's. Orson Welles is a legend.

loved it. it was among my favourite movies when I first watched it although it's no longer there, and there are a few Welles movies I'd take above it now (Magnificent Ambersons, Lady From Shanghai, Touch of Evil).

Thought it was pretty good if not excellent, then I read a list of technical stuff it did and holy shit. I think my favorite trick, just because it's so clever and simple, was having the wife's actress be a trained opera singer, but they had her sing a soprano role instead of her comfortable alto

It's pretty average by today's standards, but I can respect that it broke a lot of ground when it first came out.

I never understand what people mean when they say that about Citizen Kane in particular - it's largely considered one of the masterpieces of cinema due to its black and white cinematography and use of shadows. Judging it by "today's standards" doesn't make sense when most modern films don't even follow the same trajectory as what led to it. If it was driven by some other technical aspect that has been replicated a thousand times since, sure, but I honestly struggle to think of a movie that does what Citizen Kane does better besides The Rules of the Game, which is even earlier.

A lot of the other stuff I can think of is merely preferential - some people might like the pacing of modern movies more, etc. But what modern movie uses shadows more effectively than this and the film noir classics?

Like, the jump to color isn't a vertical leap - people still shoot in black and white now and then because it offers visual possibilities that cannot work in color. What standards are you using, exactly?

I watched it on a whim a few years ago, it's really good. Carried mostly by the strength of Charles Kane, who is a very compelling protagonist, one I could see existing in reality.

if a movie was "only good at the time," it was never good to begin with.

this is why avatar sucks. just because it was technically unprecedented at the time doesn't mean it's a good movie.
