Board 8 > The Fire Emblem series is the Turd of the Contest

Call it premature but unless Skyrim REALLY bombs it's pretty obvious to me at this point

I know I'm not the only one who thought Three Houses' success as a console FE game was gonna mean big things for the series in this contest. Almost a year later and it's still consistently one of the Switch games with the highest engagement across the Internet. It won the Voters' Choice Award at the Game Awards! It felt like a 'big deal'.

Both games were expected to have decent runs, and a lot of people took them to win highly debated matches (Awakening v Bloodborne, 3H v Xenoblade)

Instead, starting from Round 1 both games got exposed and failed to wallop what should have been layups, a Deus Ex that isn't the original and frickin South Park.

When it came time for their big matches, do they even get close and make a show of it? No. They just rolled over and died; 3H especially is getting pounded and showing it falls under XBC on the Nintendo hierarchy.

You can partly attribute this to their competition being underestimated, but all that conjecture that Three Houses boosted the series turned out to be hollow.

On the bright side, South Park exposing 3H inspired me to play the game. Just beat it, it's actually pretty good!

And we already knew GTAV was a fraudulent 1 seed the second the bracket came out; some ppl took it to lose to frickin Cuphead.

I'm not gonna give Turd of the Contest to games that largely performed within expectations

I'm inclined to agree.

I've tried every TO game I could, and never got more than 5 hours in before dropping diet FFT.

I think it's hard to overstate just how rabid in their hatred of fire emblem the smash Bros community is. It's probably a bigger factor than you think in this result.

Why would the Smash community dislike the FE series? It gave them so many characters to choose with different playstyles? You want agile sword users? Boom, Marth and Lucina. You want tough sword users? Ike and Chrom. You want magic? Robin. You want poorly written dragon nonsense? Corrin. You want pitiful references to the FE3H lords instead of actually including them? Byleth.

Oh trust me, I'm aware of that. I play Smash competitively, so I browse some forums and discords for tips and matchup advice. The amount of hate Fire Emblem gets is insane, but I didn't really expect it to manifest in a contest format. I thought people would at least take the games at face value and not as 8 slots in the Smash roster.

Uncharted 4 largely wasn't expected to perform that well and plenty took MK8 out of that match (I didn't bc I'm a dumb-dumb)

Again I feel Turd of the Contest should be reserved for something that flops hard relative to expectations. At this point the only games that can really change my opinion here are Dark Souls/Skyrim/Witcher flopping hard, bc BotW is clearly set.

Honestly, I forgot about TLOU. I feel if Batman upsets it, it'll have a good claim to the title... but that's still a 2 seed losing to a respectable 3 seed. If you had TLOU winning the division I could see it being the Turd, but I never had that much faith in it.

If we're talking about seeding, then Three Houses is doing the same! And Awakening lost to a bigger seed. No, seeding is not what matters here, but our expectations, as you've said too. Three Houses might've lost two rounds prior to the cookie had it, but a lot of those expected Xenoblade/TH to be what decided the division winner. Bloodborne was almost as heavily favored as Awakening too and it was somewhat close before rallying.

Almost as many people have TLoU > DS as the other way around.

I think the magnitude of the losses are what push Fire Emblem above everything else for me.

Bloodborne - FE: A was a 55-45 match even before the rally, well out of the range of the kind of tossup match that the various prediction 'markets' you mention had it being. 3H is obviously getting whooped rn; SFF sure, but a lot of us thought that Fire Emblem should have been the one asserting itself and laying the SFF hammer down!

For now, the only things that can happen that would make me, personally, shift the TotC title would be:

- Skyrim not winning its division
- Witcher flopping today and failing to break about 60 on SMG2, or somehow getting upset before semis
- Last of Us losing to Batman worse than XBC2 did
- Something catastrophic happening like BotW getting upset by Smash or Mario and not even making finals.

It might be. And as someone who has Fire Emblem as their favourite video game series, it's kind of crushing, especially today's result because I bounced off Xenoblade so hard. But so it goes.

This. Look at the other 13 seeds; guaranteed Uncharted 4 wins against any of them.

And look at the other 4 seeds. Mario Kart 8 would probably beat the following: Horizon, Super Meat Boy, Minecraft

Something I didn't figure into this, but occurred to me after is how hard smash fans hate fire emblem. We have a pretty sizable smash fanbase on our site so a decent amount of anti-voting should have been expected.

I think xenoblade would have still won but it would have been a bit closer

3H is good but it got put up against Xenoblade Chronicles. The RPG base is gonna be divided there and almost certainly going to go Xenoblade unless they highly favor Fire Emblem and the non-RPG fanbase is far more aware of Xenoblade and more likely to have played it. Awakening's failure against Bloodborne has me baffled, granting, but I'm willing to chalk that up to Awakening being an older game at this point and possibly being handicapped by being a DS game meaning people will automatically assume Bloodborne was 'better' due to being a console title.
