...while every entry still manages to be amazing regardless, more than John Wick?

I feel like every movie is a notable decline, but we're talking about going from a 10 to a rock bottom floor of a 9.

wow, i disagree with all of that. i don't think john wick movies are that great and i thought 2 was better than 1 (i should still see 3, though!).

i think the godfather trilogy and nolan's batman trilogy come close to what you're describing. though they don't entirely fit the description as both of them have third entries that are obviously not amazing and way weaker than the first two.

And in the case of Godfather 3 that's not weaker, that's just straight up awful. People pretend that movie doesn't even exist, it's full Crystal Skull.

John Wick 2>3>1

1 has an amazing start but the movie doesn't quite live up to its own hype. Other entries nail it.

1 is the modern classic of pure, simple revenge

2 has some cool stuff but the choreography is noticeably the worst in the series by far. (Count how many judo throws there are, I dare you.) It does have a hype as fuck ending, though.

3 delivers wholesale on the hype of 2's ending out of the gate but then falls off a bit before having a hype as fuck ending of its own, coupled with a return to form on the choreography.

yeah, it's an unpopular opinion but i like batman begins better. but the difference is pretty small. i'd say batman begins is a 10 and the dark knight is a 9.5. (the dark knight rises is like... an 8. still good, it just has a lot of weird little things that it make it significantly worse than the first two.)

eh, i think it's underrated. i still like it and i don't think it's as much of a departure from what made the franchise great as kingdom of the crystal skull was. i'll admit that a lot of the appeal for me is that it's another movie in the godfather universe, though. if it were a standalone movie, i'd probably like it way less.

i've often bashed roger ebert (and i've been given a lot of crap for it), but i'll point out that his original review of the godfather: part II is actually quite good. i think the movie is way better than his 3/4 star rating suggests, but he does a nice job explaining what the movie's weaknesses are.

While I agree with the progression downward on John Wick, the only one I'd say is great is the first one and the third one just felt like random gratuitous violence ad nauseam to a point where I didn't get any enjoyment out of it.

I've finally played Dark Souls over the last year and am currently in Dark Souls III and I would hesitantly place it here at the moment. DS3 definitely still has time to move up however since I'm probably still only in the mid-game.

Also only counting Dark Souls itself here. Bloodborne would break it by being the best and I haven't played Demon Souls.

I'm not even sure if LotR actually dips in quality or if they just have slightly diminishing returns given their length and that they're typically watched in succession over the course of a few days.

Dunno if it's just me but DS2 > DS3 strikes me as a wild take

I feel inclined to take DS3 > DS1 half the time, honestly. Everything's just so streamlined and polished up that it's a delight to play.

DS2 is the worst for sure, though.

Well, for my part, I'm still playing 3 so there's definitely room to change! Just beat Pontiff Sulyvahn if you want a marker of where I am. Usually the further in I get into a Soulsborne game the more I like them as I increasingly get used to it so I imagine there's still plenty of time here!

At the moment though I'm not the biggest fan of the level/world design in 3 and the combat has felt like it's emulating Bloodborne but without some of the mechanics and trick weapons that made it sublime in Bloodborne. 3 has had some really fun boss fights so far but idk against non-bosses I'm not sure it works as well as 1 or 2 yet.

I haven't played either in a good while, but I'd take 2 > 3 for the Souls game. 3 kinda of soured on me in terms of overall game design.

I need to play them all again, but 2 gets an unfair shake.
