I am aware that the story is apparently god awful, especially compared to BL2. But I've also heard that the gameplay is superb, mainly gunplay and exploration as well as the variability the Vauilt Hunters provide. But my friends who've purchased say it's nothing really special, kind of rehashed actually.

What are your thoughts? I need new games to play in the midst of quarantine so I figure, why not?

Definitely. Got it a few days ago and it's a pretty fun and solid game. Way better than the presequel was, that's for sure.

He's right though. Presequel sucked ass. Too many gimmicks, unappealing story and characters.

Who's the best Vault Hunter to start with IYO?

Are they fun compared to the VH in BL2? I loved Krieg and Maya.

this is true. i quit midgame but came back to it. after i found the laser type weapons.
did so much damage.

could platinum it one more time on ps3 but i dare not take on too many super long games in a row.
(100+ hour games take me 2-4 weeks to complete).

They're not fun compared to 2. As for which is best they keep getting buffs and nerfs that shifts them around.

Amara is really bad solo especially at the beginning.

Zane is probably my favorite, but I'm mad they nerfed his mod. He is the most inconsistent balance wise. He started off garbage, then became OP, then just ok.

FL4K is good, he's basically Mechromancer, but with an actual useful companion/s

Moze is boring. She really only has 1 build

That's good to hear. FL4K was the most interesting VH from previews I've seen. But that's disappointing about the other VH. Does Amara round out well? And that's not surprising about Moze. She's basically a DVA ripoff which always seemed boring.

Absolutely. The gameplay has been improved in just about every way imaginable, especially post game. Its not perfect. The story is trash. There isnt as much enemy variety, and the worlds dont feel as unique to me. Still if you like looter shooters or enjoyed BL2 you should find value in this game.

Nah, Moze is great. Probably my favourite out of 3's vault hunters so far (hit the level cap with her and Amara, reached early 20's with Zane before deciding I didn't really like him*).

In answer to the topic though, it is definitely worth it. Gameplay mechanics are the best in the series, although movement can feel a bit weighty if you're coming straight in to it from the previous games, but it's let down by the story and the new characters.

* Admittedly I might just be burnt out after playing the game so much lately.

My co-op partner's playing as FL4K and seems to be enjoying it, although he struggled a little early game while he was working out which pets were actually worth using. I'm not sure how Amara's supposed to be bad solo as she's been solid for me all the way through.

Ive finally maxed all characters. Its hard for me to rank them outside of Moze being last lol.

Zane has the most variety by having two active skills. Personally I use drone and dome.

Amara has a few builds too, and when speced the right way easily puts out the most damage at max level. I never had any issues with her being weak at any point, although at one point I tried a melee build and was pretty underwhelmed.

If youre wanting to eventually solo the raid mission its easiest with these two. Zane also has a very specific build with high survivability and damage.

Flak is fun. He felt the weakest to me early on, but I used a pet build over a crit build. Now I use a rakk attack build to take advantage of anointments and its really fun.

As a side note BL3 added anointed weapons to the game. Most are triggered at action skill end (ASE). For example you can find shields that give 50% bonus cryo damage to all guns for ten seconds on ASE. Other guns and even grenades can have ASE anointments. Since Rakk Attack has multiple charges and the shortest cooldown you can keep ASE bonuses active almost all the time. (Just a heads up though rakk attack without ASE is very weak and you dont unlock anointments until after you beat the game IIRC).

Last is Moze, who I feel is a victim of iron bear. Iron bear itself is her lone skill so there isnt too much build variety. You can change the iron bear weapons but thats about it. With iron bear having both the longest duration and longest cooldown she doesnt have much opportunity to take advantage of ASE anointments. Dont get me wrong, iron bear does decent damage and will get you through the game, but if youre looking at higher difficulty post game it loses its effectiveness.
