But you haven't. You've just made a few posts of "I watch REAL TV and it's SO MUCH BETTER" which is just shutting down discussion before it even begins.

I've explained multiple times in the past why I dislike Otis and his entire gimmick. I've also for a couple of years talked about the quote Vince McMahon offered: "Our competition is everything on television." I hold him to that. This story has no clear difference between itself and the Lana/Rusev/Ziggler storyline. Even one of the participants is the same. Romantic angles in wrestling play off like high school gossip, and while I can appreciate a silly gimmick, I can't appreciate a stupid one. Otis' gimmick of being a raving, incoherent gluttonous clown designed to lampoon some perceived slights Vince sees in the people around him does nothing for me, much in the same way that the Young Bucks doing a BTE in all red for a scene in order lampoon the Fiend did nothing for me.

And Rock, as someone who has been reading my posts in these topics for years, I expected you to not gaslight and pretend I'm someone who doesn't pretty much always articulate their positions. Shame on you. I expected better.

What the hell was even that match even what? None of that went in the way I expected.

Spoilers

-It wasn't until they were on the roof, in particular after Bryan went shoulder first into the bar, but moreso when AJ Styles punched Otis... they were using sound effects from even the little things, not just throwing Black and Mysterio to their doom. Like there are clear stock '80s arcade punch sounds coming from AJ's fists.

-The cameos are... I... what... Vince's worked alright enough, but Paul Heyman, Brother Love, and John Laurinitus? What, even... it was like a House of Horrors fever dream. And could Stephanie not even be arsed to show up live? That was some terrible pre-recorded, unfunny stupidity. And I'm grinning as I'm saying that because I cannot believe they thought that would pass muster unless it was intentional. Also, Dana is dumb. The McMahons are INSANE! That might be real money in that case!!! TAKE IT!!!!

-What happened to Shayna, Dana, and Carmella? I would've actually loved to have seen the three of them fight their way into the ring like five minutes after Asuka made off with the briefcase, some great spots, someone to climb the ladder while the men are laid out, and realize the case was already taken and the three of them pout their way out of the ring. But seriously, where'd they go?

-One major positive about this dumb, dumb cartoon were the introductions. I liked seeing who each competitor beat to qualify. I haven't kept up with Raw or Smackdown so I don't know exactly how accurate those are in terms of how things really happened (screwy finishes, etc.), but I liked seeing twelve other names there that could've been in the match and their honorable mentions. That was cool, and helped people who don't watch learn a bit more. "Hey, I know Dolph Ziggler. Otis beat Dolph Ziggler to qualify? That means something!"

-Rey and Black are dead.

-Seriously, King Corbin is going to be in soooo much trouble.

-Oh. Not for killing Rey and Black. They expected people to be tossed off the roof making this match. Insurance and all that. No, Baron broke that mirror with the weight. He'll both have to pay for property damage and be cursed with seven years of bad luck. He can ask Kane.

-Also, like, Daniel Bryan in this match and his promo a few weeks back... he felt like NXT Season 4 Justin Bateman Coaching 'This is the Stupidest Thing And I'm Going to Be As Ridiculous and IDGAF As Possible' Daniel Bryan. If only we had a Steve Blackman cameo!

-And AJ Styles... he sold well. The stupid weights, the giant Rey picture, the Undertaker picture, the casket room, the Vince office... even fumbling the briefcase like a dummy... I thought he made the stupid thing work best of all of them aside from Asuka, who... Asuka outshined everybody.

Today Becky's single reign as Raw Women's champion has lasted longer than the combined reigns of anyone else to hold the title.

And that's a good thing, other than the fact WWE had two chances to have her drop it (Sasha and Shayna) and chose neither. One of the main things is while they have done better by longer and more fleshed out title reigns (for the main titles anyway), they do miss the boat when it comes to the right place right time to just drop them. Brock to McIntyre made sense, but they did fuck all to give Becky anyone to work with.

So after losing to Edge at Wrestlemania, Orton's response is to challenge him to a wrestling match

It sounds stupid, but logical in a strange way. Orton's logic seems to be, "By forcing you to wrestle, you take more bumps on your neck. Are you in "wrestling" shape rather than fighting shape?' It doesn't make sense from a fight perspective, because you would assume you'd take more damage in a hardcore brawl. Orton in a "sport" context is saying he's in better condition, can force Edge to take abuse he wasn't taking in the LMS standing match. Chinlocks, stomps, etc.

The break in the logic is Orton as a wrestler is very slow and methodical anyway. If this were say AJ or Rollins, who move way WAY faster than Orton tends to, maybe they'd push Edge in a cardio standpoint and just prove they were better athletes rather than fighters. That or someone like Strowman, who would just chuck Edge all over the room with power moves. Orton's problem is historically, he's pretty much been in just as much hardcore shit Edge has been, just less TLC or whatever. It's a wash.

I get the match in theory. They just chose the wrong person to justify it with. My guess is a 60 minute iron man match (what would have made the idea work) is just out of the question for our sanity. Ass backwards booking with the wrong person to make the silly idea work...

That isnt whats happening here. Nobody is defending the fat simpleton gimmick. What people are defending is liking Otis DESPITE that gimmick.

Like Jakyl said, Otis has a natural charm that extends far beyond anything WWE made, and people started to like him from that. Then, this latest storyline grew him into a guy that stays positive despite people looking down on him for his appearance, and somebody who has to work through being shy and socially awkward (something he said comes from his own personal life), and people obviously connected with that and wanted to see him succeed. And he was actually allowed to. It wasnt some trick or setup, it was legitimately a story about that guy succeeding.

This isnt a case of people going lol fat guy funny despite that still being his base gimmick because WWE sucks. This is a case of people legitimately growing to like this guy and wanting to see him succeed, despite what he started as. That is certainly not disgusting.

And so far, WWE is actually continuing to give him those feel good moments, so people are enjoying the ride until the inevitable crash.

I mean by all accounts, Otis is basically just Nikola Bogojevic dialed up to 11. Even Mandy says they became good friends at the performance center because of the way he acts and how it made her laugh. He's generally just a silly, goofy guy.

From what I have on my spreadsheet, Bayley's had a solid run as The Man, with 4 reigns in the last 12 months, and only a 1-2 week gap between losing and regaining the title. Barring any crazy upsets on future Smackdowns, she'll probably drop the title to Sasha Banks later on down the road.

I've also kept an eye on the retroactive Man titles, the ones vacated in the past due to retirement, leaving, or Leukemia

Edge - Retired as The Man in 2011; returned to action in 2020. Hasn't been defeated in singles competition yet.

Batista - Left WWE as The Man in 2014. Returns in 2019. Batista -> HHH -> Orton -> Kofi -> Lesnar -> McIntyre

Reigns - Future uncertain in 2018, took hiatus from WWE to battle Leukemia while being The Man. Returns in 2019. Reigns -> Shane -> Owens -> Samoa Joe
