That's one of those things that I see get referenced and brought up all the time. Even all my friends like it. In fact, one of them made me watch a couple of episodes a little while ago and I didn't really get it.
It just seemed so manic and "le random". Maybe I answered my own question, because the internet usually likes that kind of stuff.

Too many to list I guess you'll just have to watch it yourself

And if you just watched two rando episodes when all of the animated parts (1-5) are one continuous story of course it would seem "le random"

Thats why I like it at least.

It was the first couple of episodes of what I assume was the second season, going by Netflix. From what I've been told, the story is an overall continuous but each part follows a different set of protagonists or something. With that story stuff aside, yeah, the humor and style still felt very le random for my taste, at least.

I think it's an anime you enjoy if you watch a lot of anime, basically. It takes all the stupid shit from other anime and says "all that stuff, let's make it even MORE like that. Let's do it to the upmost". And it does it without winking at the audience.

It's ludicrous, over the top and unapologetic. It's like a love letter to anime from a person who is jaded about anime.

Also (and sorry for the cliche here, but) you kinda need to understand the continuity to get any value out of it. Netflix also skips an entire two seasons (and arguably the best ones too).

The story basically follows a family member from the Joestar family over the ages. So each arc is the son or grandson or whatever of the previous hero. And young joseph is the best one.

When it hits its stride (Part 2, then again in Part 4) its essentially a generic shounen with all of the generic sucked out.

So instead of a bunch of stereotypical bishies throwing elements and beams and swords at each other, you get a bunch of muscular, effeminate eccentrics who have fights that consist of trying to figure out how to beat the other guys hyper specific incredibly broken ability with their hyper specific incredibly broken ability.

For people whove read/watched a lot of DBZ/One Piece/Naruto/Bleach/Fairy Tail/MHA/etc, its a breath of fresh air that provides some variety while sacrificing none of the things we actually enjoy about the battle shounen genre.

I watched the OVA with the bad subtitles all the way back in 2001. Read the manga around 2006. It's nothing more than a meme/fad now. Band wagon bs.

Also, the OVA mini series is vastly superior to the tv series imo. More faster paced, serious/horror tone, and great action.

I got into it fairly recently, got part four expected to arrive on blu-ray by next friday (according to amazon, we'll see what carona says about it)

It's great. It's wacky, over the top violence with strange dialogue and a pretty cool overarching story all things considered.

Sub, especially since the later parts start having copyright issues that don't allow for the actual stand names to be said in the dub.

Parts 1 and 2 have dubs that are worth watching because they made a bizarre choice to have over the top accents. Parts 3-5 are standard anime dub affair, though part 5's dub has been great so far.

It doesn't feel like the majority of the anime trash out there.

I like how the designs of the characters reflect a time when anime did not have the modern anime style. Characters in Jojo have more human proportions rather than having large heads, eyes and chibi features.

It feels more pure as it's ripped from the source material, which was written and drawn in the 80s, before manga was popular in the west.

Plus with the macabre elements it reminds me of watching older anime such as the original Voltron.

It comes out when it comes to the overarching story. Since youve been watching random episodes of course you wouldnt be able to see the moving storyline and why theyre doing what they do. Id recommend just watching the first three episodes to get a general gist of what kind of plotlines the series has.

Honestly, with the way the show presents itself, I would prefer it to be on the more light-hearted side of things.

These.

It's an anime that set the groundwork for many anime that came after it, so it does it's own thing rather than following "the rules" everything else does. And at the risk of sounding like a hoity toity anime hipster, it's significantly more intelligent than most series, since battles revolve more around picking apart an opponent's special power rather than just outright overwhelming them with the power of friendship.

It's one of those series that SEEMS random to an outsider, but if you follow it it instead makes it's own twisted for of sense.

It's to anime what Earthbound is to videogames, what Twin Peaks is to TV series, what Tim Burton is to movies and what Branston Pickle is to condiments. It's something worth trying because even if you don't like it, it's completely unlike anything else you'll find elsewhere.

Oh if you like light-hearted things the series is probably not for you then. The series is filled with horror elements since the creator is a big fan of horror.

Yeah, I've always figured it was some wacky, action-comedy. The two episodes I watched definitely gave off that vibe. But now knowing the show takes itself seriously kind of takes away some of the allure for me.

Yeah. "Camp" is the best word for it. It's over the top but takes itself seriously.

The first Part in particular is a straight up gothic horror.

  • The generational aspect of each saga means a complete story is told with every arc. The adventures generally feel more mapped out than other stories, or so I think.
  • All the characters have skill sets with mindbogglingly specific utilities and flaws, and its amazing to watch them be challenged and overcome those challenges.
  • Its flamboyant in ways that you wouldn't expect anything to ever be, even though the male characters are usually very buff and masculine.
  • Most of the main characters are named after bands and musicians, at least in the sagas I've watched, and its great.
  • It has a great sense of humor, often derived from its stoic and manly looking characters having deceptively quirky and deep characterizations, not to mention the bizarre nature of their abilities.
  • Despite all of this, its surprisingly grounded compared to your Yu Yu Hakushos and One Pieces. Its set in something resembling the real world, taking place in a rough amalgamation of our history and in real life locations. The second saga takes place in 1938, and the Nazis are already causing trouble around the world.
  • Its really violent, closer to Fist of the North Star than the more kid friendly violence of Dragon Ball and the like. Expect decapitations, graphic breaking of limbs, and some stuff that defies easy explanation but boy does blood spew everywhere.
  • Villains are menacing and ruthless (the thoroughly evil Nazis are by no means the most evil force in part 2, for instance) and the stakes are generally high, especially as each story comes to an end.
