I'm not essential and don't have to work, but I would say that any public-facing essential services should really be getting hazard pay. At the very least, grocery stores being essential very nicely spits in the face of the "we don't need you therefore you don't deserve a livable minimum wage" argument that people seem to like raising against their employees.

I'm getting a couple extra dollars per hour, and I'm fine with that.

I should be getting paid extra now because I'm literally doing the work of two people. Normally I'm supposed to migrate the server while the workstations are replaced by my assistant(s), but the last several sites I've had to do everything by myself. The server takes all night and requires my constant attention except for a couple hours while it's patching. Each workstation takes about an hour to complete and it gets slower as more stations come online. My next site has 7 workstations on the order form.

don't you do them "in parallel"? depends what you're actually doing though.

They're generally scattered around various offices and after being up all night working on the server I'm not about to run back and forth all over the building. And besides, most of these sites have horribly slow networks, the more stuff I try to do at once the worse it gets.

when I have a lot of devices to setup at the same time, I usually try set them up all on the same table/room if I can, and perform the same step on each of them in sequence so that they're all showing the same thing. though I guess it's a lot easier with tablets or laptops or credit card machines that have their own screens. I guess for desktops you'd need a lot of monitors or a bunch of kvm switches or something.

(even more advanced setups would use scripts and things to have completely unattended and consistent installations but I guess that's more for when you're installing dozens or hundreds of stations).

We should get hazard pay. No one should receive threats of termination for taking precautions (eg., doctors being banned from wearing masks, etc.,). We should be better-equipped to perform our "essential" jobs efficiently, no matter what field we are in; call it an investment if you must. The next person who suggests we should just give our sick pay to someone else, or some other idiotic thing like that, should be flogged in public.

These are indeed my opinions on such matters.

Depends on whether they're in a customer-facing role in an actual essential service. Somebody working at a grocery store maybe should make extra (and the stores are making more which covers it). Somebody just working at a restaurant should not (and that business is hurting anyway). Either way, they have jobs right now when many Americans are worried about their finances so... they kinda are receiving a reward as it is.

I'm working and the people who have to come in as opposed to working remotely will be getting what amounts to hazard pay, but they haven't said how much yet.

Not just public facing either. Where I work it would be harder for covid to get in but if it does and we domt catch it quick enough (we won't) it will spread like wildfire. Hell this job deserves hazard pay period pandemic or not.

That site where I was supposed to have an assistant ended up taking 18 hours. With help it probably would have been 10 to 12, depending on their competence.

Who's forking over the extra money?

Not every business owner is swimming in cash and laughing at their employees. Many businesses, small ones especially, are taking huge losses from the decrease in business whether they're allowed to open or forced to close.

I feel like when people ask for extra money, they don't give a crap how it happens or who it comes from.
