Donald Trump today at a heated rose garden conference said he would extend the social distancing guidelines till the end of April after reiterating he wants to re-open America by easter is now listening to doctors to keep social distancing in place.

He also said at the conference that if they can keep the deaths to 100,000 or below then they have done a "very good job" of this pandemic!! Trump now says they are being told that 2 million americans could die from the outbreak but says if they could keep it just 6 figures than what they did was "perfect"

This comes when just a couple weeks ago, he talked about how this was just a "flu" that was being sensationalized by the media and called the current deaths small compared to 27,000 died from the regular Flu last year!!

Mixed Messaging has been coming from the White House on whether calling this a true pandemic or a "hoax" created by liberal to make it worse than it is as americans are confused over what the White House is calling COVID-19.

At the same time, Trump boasted that his ratings of people watching his conferences was MORE than all of the networks original shows such as The Bachelor.

100,000 is a good total if you ended up bungling it all up at any point. It's not something to pat yourself on the back for since it means you did fuck up, realistically based on data that showed various models of how this could have been realistically handled, a job well done would have been about half of that. It's a lot better than some of the projections that were out there before social distancing was in place, we're talking 350,000 to 1 million, there were a lot of scary numbers floating around from some very credible people. 100,000 is a lot better than that, but that's about 50,000 lives that didn't need to be lost.

According to this if we acted quickly and aggressively this would be over by August and we would have had 53k deaths. It also says if we did nothing we could have had 982k deaths dso I guess it's not all bad but man do I wish we did more earlier.

What was your point then? It seems pretty cut and dry given the context to what you were replying about. I have a few ideas, but I don't like to assume on these boards and it's hard to read into what intentions are without someone changing direction after people question them.

They said the math checks out, which would be in agreement to what youre now saying was your point: being a unified message as each countrys leaders are saying the same things based on their respective populations. Zero was impossible. South Korea handled it perfectly and they still lost lives, there was just no way around it. Someone infected would have returned home to the US and contact tracing would miss someone and it would spread a little and lives would still be lost. That said it could have been a lot better than it is right now. Honestly with the right decisions we could have been on the decline already. It wouldn't have been zero, but it would be a lot closer to that than it will be now.

He takes an epidemic, and of course, makes it about himself in a positive way.

I hate to tell you this, but from a statistical perspective, ~100,000 deaths from a population of 308,745,538 people (as of the 2010 census and ignoring a roughly 20k growth estimate in 2019) is outstanding for a pandemic of the proportion the media is making this out to be. And you can bitch about how heartless that is to say, but the people in office should be looking at it that way since their job is to look after the population, not everyone. Yes there's a difference when it comes to this shit.
