Ball python are probably the best beginner snake. They are very chill, don't get too big, and there is a huge selection of color and pattern morphs to choose from.

why suggest pythons for a first snake? they're not venomous, but they're strong as hell and fairly finicky to take care of. go for a corn snake or maybe some type of king snake.

The bigger pythons are a bit harder to deal with, but ball pythons are easy to care for. They aren't strong enough to hurt you, and usually good eaters. The various rat snakes are good beginners as well, but they are much less interactive. They constantly move, and many of them will musk or shit on you. I may be biased, but I am not a fan of them. Hell, I would recommend a hognose over almost any rat snake, and those ARE mildly venomous.

maybe i was projecting a bit. last pythons i handled were reticulated python at a local zoo while acting as a volunteer handler, and it was a god damn nightmare. before that the biggest snake i ever handled was a king snake, but being stuck alone in a room with a hissing ~15 foot snake left a bad impression...

I absolutely get where you are coming from. I honestly don't think retics should even be in the pet trade. They are gorgeous, but way way too big for almost anyone that doesn't run a shelter of some sort. I worked a reptile shop for a few years and the retics and burmese pythons were always the worst to deal with.

didn't help that the bitch handler i was shadowing thought it would be a good idea to show me a scar from a python bite before leaving me in the room with them...

People who have been handling these things for a long time forget how scary they can be. My first day at the reptile shop, the person training me let a full grown black throat monitor out to clean its enclosure. To keep it from running around the store, the guy told me to pick the thing up and hold it like a baby. As if that were a completely my normal thing to do.

Green tree pythons and emerald tree boas are gorgeous snakes, but definitely not for beginners. They tend to be pretty aggressive, require a more elaborate enclosure, and have longer fangs than most constrictors. If you get bit, it's gonna hurt.

This is what my gf has. I'm not well versed in pet snakes but just thought I'd contribute, seems like a good option

if you picked it up it would skunk you and try to escape
