Nope, final fantasy was supposed to be their last game as Square was about to go bankrupt.

Also it can't be a never ending story when most games are standalone.

But that's not why they called it that, they originally called it Fighting Fantasy but had to change the name 'cuz of copyright douchery.

It's not really copyright douchery, because a) it's a trademark issue, not copyright, and b) someone else literally used that name for years, and was still actively using it at the time.

Basically the same reason you can't open a diner and call it the Mickey Mouse Cafe. Ironically, it's also why Dragon Quest couldn't be called Dragon Quest in the US (because this was a thing: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DragonQuest ).

In fact, I personally owned a Fighting Fantasy book before I owned a Final Fantasy game, so confusion in the marketplace was certainly possible.
