I think in general "here's a new concept that we'll cover from scratch"

is always a lot easier to execute than "here's a concept we've already covered, watch as we try to find new ways of approaching it that are just as if not more interesting than what you've already seen"

for one thing, it doesn't lend itself quite as well to beginning-middle-end as the first.

I guess you need to separate the story from the setting, so that you can tell an interesting story without having to rely so much on the establishment of a novel setting being what drives the entertainment. and I think probably hollywood relies a *lot* on "novel setting" as the driving force of most of their movies, rather than actually having interesting stories.

Scream 2 at least has more action than Scream 1. Your son will like it

I think because a lot of them were planned as one off movies but then did so successful that they made more and then it goes downhill because its hard to capture lightning in a bottle again

I thought Friday the 13th kinda peaked in the middle 1-4 were pretty good. Then it was downhill. But generally horror sequels and remakes aren't great. One of the best remakes ever, any genre, has to be Fright Night though. The original kinda sucked (heh) but the newer one was amazing.

Cube 2 is worse than a typical episode of Psi Factor/Outer Limits/Twilight Zone... almost no effort or budget

A few reasons. Original art director is pushed out of the process like gieger with aliens franchise

The original director creator left the franchise see hellraiser

Story was self contained and needed no sequel (jaws, the thing, the blob, pet cementary

Faked sequel do to production rights screwup (see almost every moved that ends in living dead)

The big bad was exposed and the unknown villan is just a villan (The phantasm. He was scarest in the first but since hes outed he he loses impacr even though the others are still awesome

They move from scary to action dead space
