I got so distracted by animal crossing but now im back to Doom and it rips. I just beat the first boss fight and it felt so good.

Game is fucking godly. Ppl hate the platforming but I think it helps pace the game a bit, I'd give myself a hernia of it were a nonstop slaughterfest.

Also one of my big problems with Doom 16 was the environment design, and Eternal fixes that problem and then some. Yah I'm sure people would argue some levels aren't 'Doom-like' but I don't want to spend 15 hours in shitty industrial areas and sometimes Hell.

Can't get enough of it, love the cheat system and how easy they made it to hunt down items with the map and fast traveling.

Any fun cheat/rune combos you've come across?
My main setup for the playthrough was the Long Distance GK + Quick GK + Speed Boost after GK which worked pretty great for large battles as you just keep building up speed and flying everywhere.

Instant Stagger Cheat + Silver Bullet Cheat + Full Auto Shotgun turns the game into Doom: John Wick which made for a few fun levels while hunting down unlockables.

Haven't tried the multiplayer too much yet.

I recently bought 2016 but haven't played yet so im not expecting to play eternal for a very long time. are they both good?

I never played 2016 (or any other Doom before this) but I think it's pretty easily my favorite FPS. Was super psyched up for Halo on PC, but it's going to feel so slow after this.

Incredibly fast paced combat with a fun focus on resource management. Killing enemies in different ways will give you ammo, life, or armor which keeps the encounters feeling fresh as you try to stay maxed out.
Has a lot of unlockable lore and a little bit of story, but you can skip most of that if you just want to shoot things.

I found the first one better

thsi one had some bad pacing with drawn out missions. Still incredible at times but a lot moments of tedium for me

If there are only two grenade types, why is there a toggle button? Why not just make that second button use the ice grenade?

Yeah, the lack of separate grenade buttons is incredibly annoying. Ended up making a macro to toggle to the other type, first, then toggle back.

It's super rad, the mobility you have is so sick. It's like an FPS Devil May Cry almost.

2016 was basically my first Doom game (I probably played around an hour or two of the original back in the day), and all the weapons felt fresh and neat. Using the same weapons again isn't as exciting.

(Biiiig doom fan here, classic doom is my #1 game of all time, and doom 2016 is my #6.)

I'm pretty conflicted about eternal...

Visually, I think it's the best looking piece of media ever created. The skyboxes alone are physically jaw-dropping, the level environments wildly mesmerizing in their intricate creativity and variety. The gory creatures and animations and glory kills are so cool I 100% can't believe video games are capable of it.

The combat and gameplay, just such a fresh, impressive, ingenious take on action gameplay, especially for the shooter genre. The most satisfying abilities and effects I've felt in video games, swinging that crucible, spamming that chaingun turret mode, nailing that sticky bomb on an arachnotron turret...The sounds and music do a ton of the work here, in addition to the visuals, again.

...But...on the other hand, it's just so tiring to play. I'm not necessarily having what I would call "fun". I'm getting satisfaction, yes, definitely. I'm entering into an incredible trance, sure. But I'm just not sure I can call it fun. The missions...they're just so long. I can't make it through an entire level without exiting to take a break. And the combat...I'm kinda following the rules they've set up, I'm not really "playing", I'm "doing". I'm doing all the things they're forcing me to do, mostly just keeping up with my resources, not gleefully murdering like I want to.

And I've been trying to say the platforming was fine, there wasn't that much of it, it's not a big deal...but by the end of the game, I was really sick of it. You jump to a wall, look around to where to jump next. That's it. Over and over. The platforming was better in the first game, I might even say. I enjoyed the first game's argent tower level, that was pretty fun to climb!

(And my biggest gripe: I hated grabbing walls. Half the time I grab a wall, I suddenly start falling, and have to grab the wall again. I have tried every combination of button presses, it kept happening. )

Story and stuff was good though.

So in the end, I think I prefer 2016 better. I admit that Eternal is more interesting, more impressive, all that stuff, but I enjoyed 2016 more, and I think I'll be going back to 2016 more often in the future.

There are a lot of things about Doom Eternal that just don't work for me, but the one I'll say is genuinely bad is having to grab walls. I mean, you auto-grab them when you dash into them. Why not auto-grab them when you jump into them too? Blech.
