... And this game is so damn unforgiving. I have died so many times and lost so many geos. I was finally making a lot of progress and got to the Crystal Peaks, trying to get back to a shop of some kind to spend my geos since I've amassed almost 1500 & I died. Well that's OK, I'll just go get my corpse ghost right? WRONG. My dead body generated behind a gate which I can't open yet and I can't reach him with any attacks. Seriously, wtf?

Has this happened to anyone else? Giving up 100 - 200 geos is one thing but this is so much more. :(

I remember having something very similar happen in the caves. I think I just got over it and moved on but yes the game can be extremely frustrating.

Well it's a metroidvania. That's a genre whose main concept is being hard as fuck.

Yes and No. This game is much more intense.

I may just have to let it go. No way I find the way through to open that gate without dying again.

There's an NPC in the main settlement that will retrieve your shade for you if it's inaccessible or too hard to get back to

I just plain don't like this game. I know some people love it but the bad map system coupled with almost unfair death mechanics just had me.. meh.

If you think it is hard now just wait until endgame. Also do Path of Pain

I thought the beginning was by far the hardest part personally, at least until you get to optional/DLC stuff.

Though it's nonlinear enough that my beginning and someone else's beginning might be pretty different...

Probably in my top 10 games ever. As mentioned that guy in the first town you can give him a rotten egg and he will get your shadow back and you'll get your geo if you died in a horrible spot and dont wanna risk it.

I didnt really have much of a problem with hollow knight. I dont think I ever permanently lost my geos? I was always able to get back and get them back.

its not an amazing game but I think its difficulty is overstated.

Uh, what? Aside from Hollow Knight, pretty much every Metroidvania is way too fucking easy.

Hollow Knight is difficult but if you are having major trouble in the game before end-game the game only gets much more difficult as it goes along. It's an unforgiving game very similar to Dark Souls in Metroidvania form.

Another huge aspect of the game is learning how to handle each enemy some are simple to dispatch, but even regular enemies need a certain method to handle them without major headaches.

It was much more difficult at the beginning for me. A couple relics really help.

The final bosses are very difficult though, yes.

"Hard game" isn't one of the first identifiers I'd use for Hollow Knight, though it's not completely inaccurate, I suppose. The post-launch expansion content in particular has some teeth-kickingly difficult stuff but nothing before then goes beyond a 7/10 in the struggle department IMO.

Don't sweat your geo too much. You'll eventually have so much that you won't even be able to spend it on anything beyond post-game money dumps. Unfortunately that means the death mechanic kind of loses its teeth, but at least you don't have to stress out about it!

That's good to know about the geo.

And while the difficulty can feel intense the only true frustration I've gotten is the game putting my hollow behind a currently unaccessible location and it wasn't till after this area did I finally unlock the rotten egg guy.

I'm really enjoying the game. Dunno why I never played it sooner.

Geo seems scarce at the beginning but towards the end you'll be rolling with it. I wouldn't sweat over 2k.

The difficulty felt comparable to a number of SNES games to me. I think I only ever died on bosses and usually a bench was not too far away.

Something I didn't figure out for a long time: If you quit the game, it will save and take you back to your last bench. So if you are low on health, just quit the game and resume. It'll keep everything you found but you'll be back to the safety of a bench.

Of course I'd hear about this after completing the game.

There are plenty of games that have the same attitude with dying, like I said the Souls series is very similar if you die once you lose your souls if you can't make it back to where you died they are gone permanently.

Shit, at least Hollow Knight allows you to get your soul back from a very bad situation if you go to the Rotten Egg guy.
